George Henry Benz, JR., M.D.

Goodyear, AZ. - On December 24, 2020, we unexpectedly lost George Benz, 78, of Goodyear, Arizona. He was an accomplished general and vascular surgeon for 29 years in Pittsburgh, PA. He was honorably discharged as a Major in the US Air Force. A graduate of LaSalle College and University of Pittsburgh Medical School, he was on staff at Forbes Regional and University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers. He was an avid golfer, well-known for his cooking and his single malts, undying love for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins; he also served as a Marshall in the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

He was the beloved husband of Joanne Benz, devoted father of Jeffrey Benz (Jiuzhou Qiao), Jennifer Beckemeyer (Robert), and Julie Benz (Richard Orosco); loving grandfather to Christopher & Austin Benz, Robert & Tatum Beckemeyer & Maggie Qiao; brother of Edward (late Barbara) Benz, Joseph (Heidi) Benz, Dr. Henry (Carol) Benz, Trudy (John) Biddle, William (Sharon) Benz, Brenda Benz, James (Sue) Benz, and Dr. Thomas (Renee) Benz; brother-in-law of James (Marilyn) Seemiller and John (Barbara) Seemiller; and uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews.

A memorial ceremony will be arranged by the immediate family in Pittsburgh in the Spring, 2021.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Detroit Skating Club by mail: 888 Denison Court, Bloomfield Hills MI 48302 or gifting to: Help-us-_preserve-the-Detroit-Skating-Club-legacy on Go Fund Me. Please note George's name and name of his wife/ children so family can be notified of your contribution.
