Brodmerkel Family:
I was just informed that the dearest Dr. George Brodmerkel passed tragically last winter. I write to express my deepest sympathy and to affirm what most already know; Dr. Brodmerkel was a remarkable man of character, integrity, and wit. I met Dr. Brodmerkel under unfortunate situations, but was honored none-the-less. I had fallen very ill at the young age of twenty and was not hoding up as I wanted physically or metally from illness. Dr. Brodmerkel was not able to solve and remedy the problem, altho he worked diligently on my behalf. Dr. Brodmerkel joked with me when I was down and was the light in a hospital room when he entered; he cut thru the protocols (much to the disdain of the hospital and nurses)to ease his patienst and get the treatment needed; he phoned and checked on my status at home and answered when needed; he cut out any waits to see other specialists by rendering a favor by them to him, on my behalf; and he always made time in his office to see me... even if it left him carrying around an un-eaten sandwich or piece of fruit in his jacket from not caring properly for himself. Dr. Brodmerkel was a grandfather model and doctor when I needed help in the hospital. I have never forgotten, even 15 years ago, of his kindness and big heart. I understand God for returning him home, he has earned his wings and is an angel. I send my prayers and gratitude to his family. Thank you for taking such good care of him (he always spoke of his wife, children and cats), because of you, he was able to take such good care of people like me. I will forever be grateful and respectful to such an exceptional man, and those he shared his path with.

My deepest sympathy to the Brodmerkel family.
I was made aware of his passing amidst a group of colleagues all trained by him. We were devasted to hear the news. He was instrumental in each of our training and we all have special fond memories of him.
I consider it an honor and privlege to have been his fellow. I will be indebted to him for his mentoring and owe a steadiness in my hands to the thought of him watching over my shoulder.

Dr. Brodmerkel will be respectfully remembered by many. I was just a teenager in the 1970's and Allegheny Gastro was just beginning to grow with Brodmerkel and Agrawal. I typed the many papers he wrote on ERCP and kept his quickly ever growing Curriculum Vitae up to date. Dr. B was always fascinated at how fast I could type. He would tell the patients "the letter is already in the mail" when he dictated one to their PCP, making me so proud.
With my deepest sympathy and respect.

It's so hard to find the right words.... I have known Dr Brodmerkel since 1992 and truly believe if not for his remarkable knowledge, persistence, and kindness, I would not be here today! His kindness touched my heart in a way no other doctor ever has. Suffering from chronic pancreatitis and numerous GI issues, there were so many times I felt hopeless. But Dr. "B" never gave up looking for a fix. His passion and kindness gave me the HOPE I so needed. I will miss him more than words can say. I saw him about 8 weeks ago and he hugged me so tight. He told me to never give up....He will always hold a very special place in my heart. I will see you again my friend. To Diane and family ... my heart aches for all of you. He was a wonderful man who brought so much hope to his patients, He is loved by so many....may you find comfort in knowing this. My thoughts and prayers are with you

I have known Dr. B since I was a 12 year old girl in Ingomar. At 15 he diagnosed me with IBD, spastic colon, diverticulitis and a host of many other ailments. At 25, I had full blown Chrohn's disease. Thanks to Dr. Brodmerkel I have been able to live with this disease and stay surgery free 30 years later. He was like my favorite uncle. He shared my tears and fears as I struggled to understand this disease. DR. Brodmerkel was a gifted pioneer in the field of gastroenterology and will be missed by all he knew. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family. I too, will miss his larger than life presence, hearty laughter and cowboy hat. RIP Dr. B...the world has lost one of the truly great Doctors of all time....I will be keeping his family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Dear Diane,
You have my deepest sympathy and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I was very young when I started working with Dr. B and grew up at Allegheny Gastro. I grew to love and respect Dr. B and looked at him as a second Dad. I am forever grateful for all that he taught me and will never forget the surprise on his face when he realized that I was not born yet when JFK was shot. He was a wonderful teacher and physician.

Dear Diane, my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. I met Dr. Brodmerkel in 1994 as a very sick patient with Chronic Pancreatitis due to Pancreas Divisum. I would not be here today if it weren't for Dr. Brodmerkel's rare talent and extreme kindness. I loss count of the number of ERCPs that he performed on me but no matter what, each time he made me feel safe and cared for and that we would find a way to help me get better. I truly loved this man for his pure and simple kindness and I know many great rewards are his in the kingdom of Heaven. Surely the Lord welcomed him in by saying, "Well done my kind and faithful servant."

Dear Diane,
I'm so terribly saddened to learn of the tragic loss of your husband and my incredible former boss. Dr. B had a powerful impact on my career and my life, and I count myself lucky to have been among the many who learned from him and laughed with him over the years. He will remain forever one of the most unforgettable people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, and he will live on in my mind and heart for the rest of my life. Jim and I both send our deepest sympathies to your entire family at this most difficult time. What the world has lost, Heaven has gained.

I remember meeting Dr. Brodmerkel for the first time. He and I laughed many times about his shocking entrance to the room. I was sent to him as a patient because no other gastroenterologist could determine what was wrong. Needless to say, he did. In the years that followed, we would spend time during office visits discussing his latest hunting trips, his catches, the magnificent animals he saw and the books he read while holed up in his cabin or lodge.
He knew where I lived in McCandless, and as he drove by he would yell, "Hello." When he saw me in Giant Eagle he would stop and look at my cart to make sure I had no forbidden gluten in my cart.
I will miss his booming voice and cowboy hat perched on his head. He was a caring, intuitive doctor and a bigger than life legend in so many ways.
