FRISCO - George E. Cooper Sr., former long-time financial advisor to the City of Longview, Longview ISD, Gregg County, Good Shepherd Medical Center, Kilgore College and other municipalities throughout East Texas, died in his sleep on March 28, 2007, in Bedford, Texas.
Born on May 20, 1918, in Columbia, South Carolina, he graduated from the University of Mississippi and served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1943. He married Mattinel Clayton in 1943. He entered public finance in the late 1940s, reporting on the financial status of municipalities for the Texas Bond Reporter . Over his 45-year career, he worked as an underwriter and financial advisor with Dittmar and Co., Central Investment Co., Dallas Rupe and Sons, Cooper and Co., Schneider, Bernet & Hickman, Inc., Thomson, McKinnon and finally, Southwest Securities.
He enjoyed fishing, golf, woodworking and the mountains of Colorado. He was a strong supporter of St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Mattinel of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, George E. Cooper Jr. of Frisco, Texas, and Steve Cooper of Lone Star, Texas; two daughters, Carolyn Cooper of Houston, and Cynthia Cooper of Fort Worth; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private family graveside service was held on Saturday, March 31, 2007, in Frisco.
