George DeVore Obituary

George M. DeVore, 83, of Monongahela, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, in the Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Monongahela, a son of the late Benjamin and Rose Gordon Herd DeVore. Mr. DeVore was a graduate of Monongahela High School, Class of 1944. After high school, he entered the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946, and served on Liberty and oil tankers. He then joined the Pennsylvania National Guard, 28th Division, 110th Infantry Co. A during the Korean War. After his service, he returned to work at his family business in Monongahela which has been in operation since 1903. Mr. DeVore was the fourth generation owning and operating DeVore Hardware Store. In 1955, Mr. DeVore joined the Monongahela Volunteer Fire Department, where he later became chief and was a lifetime member. He formerly served on the Ringgold School Board and the Monongahela Joint Authority where he was past chairman. He was a former member and trustee for many years at the First Presbyterian Church in Monongahela. Currently, he was a member and deacon at the John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park. He was a 50-year member of the Henry M. Phillips Lodge 337 F&AM and a life member of SS John W. Brown Liberty Ship Association in Baltimore. He is survived by two sons, Donald R. and his wife Cheryl DeVore, of Monongahela, and John William and his wife Laura DeVore, of Cary, N.C.; one daughter, Nancy J. DeVore, of Key West, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ben and his wife Julie, Lindsay, and Peter DeVore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Huston DeVore, who died Aug. 22, 1995; and two brothers, Benjamin and Donald DeVore. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mark Woomer and Rev. Charles Berthoud co-officiating. Interment will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Mon Valley Firing Squad and Honor Guard.
