GEORGE DIAMANTOPULOS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 7 to Mar. 9, 2015.
DIAMANTOPULOS
GEORGE C.
Of Highland Park on Sunday, March 1, 2015, age 81. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary Jane; his beloved in-laws, the O'Malley family; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Born on September 25, 1933, he was the youngest child of the late Constantine and Patricia Diamantopulos. His beloved father emigrated from Greece to America at age 13. George grew up in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh with his older siblings, the late Theodora "Teddy", and James, a WWII combat Marine. He graduated from Linden Public School and then Taylor Allderdice High School in 1951. George received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955 with a major in History. His proudest moment came when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1955. He then served two years of active duty with the 2nd Marine Division out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Thereafter, he served for 18 years in the Organized Marine Reserves, principally with the 12th Infantry Battalion in Pittsburgh. He retired in 1975 with the rank of Major of Infantry. The Marine Corps was in his heart until his death. He graduated from the Duquesne University School of Law in 1961 and following admission to the Bar, began his law career with small firms until he established his own private general practice in 1969, remaining a sole practitioner until the end. In addition, from 1986 to 1996, he served as an Assistant Allegheny County Solicitor. At the time of his death, he was an active Emeritus member of the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County and a retired member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. In 1972 he had the good fortune to meet Mary Jane O'Malley, a lovely Irish lass who he married in 1975. George and Mary Jane shared a love of travel and vacationed during their years together in every country in Europe as well as Russia and all of the Scandinavian countries. They also enjoyed several Caribbean cruises. George particularly loved Greece and her islands, the home of his ancestors. His main avocation was the continuous study of History, especially Greek, the Civil War and World War II, which he continued to pursue until his death. Friends received at McCABE BROS., INC. FUNERAL HOME, www.mccabebrothers.com, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Monday, 3-7 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 6:30 p.m., Fr. Christopher Bender, celebrant. A Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m., Fr. Jack O'Malley, celebrant. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, www.marine heritage.org.

Dear Mary Jane,
Austin and I were so sad to hear of George's passing. We so enjoyed the time you visited the lake; he was a special person and we were glad to have that opportunity to get to know him.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy to George's family. My husband, Paul, and George were in the Marine Reserves together. I recall the laughter and fun when we were together at Marine functions. Sadly, I lost Paul two years ago. My heart goes out to you and the family. I know, only too well, How difficult this loss is. May God bless and be with you. Corinne Mazerov

To the Diantopulos family---In1976 when my family moved to Pittsburgh, George welcomed me into the local Marine Corps "fraternity." Over the years he stayed in touch as our son--also a Marnie officer-- served in 3 wars. George's support, good humor and devotion to the Corps will be fondly remembered.---Walter Goedeke, Lexington, Kentucky

To the Diamantopulos family. I served with the Captain in Pittsburgh on Forbes Avenue. One of the best memories was a Morning inspection when he announced to a Marine, "your cover is frayed" (a cover is a hat in the Marines) to which the Marine answered "fraid of what Sir?" The only time I saw the Captain speechless. Priceless.

To the Diamantopulos family: I remember him as a Marine Capt. at the 12th. My father was his 1st Sgt. and always spoke very highly of the Capt. often referring to him as a great Marine & officer. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know now the gates of heaven are guarded by a few good men, the Capt. & my Dad. Semper Fi. Dave Gallik

As children, George and I were born the same year, 1933, and grew up and played together as children on South Linden Avenue in Pittsburgh. We attended Linden Avenue grade school where George was beloved for his wonderful sense of humor, his athletic abilities and warmth. After graduation, we went to different high schools and did not see much of each other. He graduated from college and proudly served in the Marines. Shortly thereafter, I left for Washington, DC to study medicine, but returned to Pittsburgh now and then where I occasionally would see George. He was a dear friend from childhood and I sadly feel his passing. My deepest sympathies to his wife and may God rest his soul.
