George Fitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2014.
George Fitz, age 61, of Iowa Falls, died on Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday November 22, 2014 at the First Congregational U.C.C. in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Friday at the Boat Club in Iowa Falls.

George Bradley Fitz passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born August 6, 1953 in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Alan and Ida (Nissly) Fitz. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School with the class of 1972, Ellsworth College (1974) and attended Western Michigan University. He married Rebecca Paden on November 22, 1975 and to this union three children were born.

In 1972 he formed Grace Indexing Company which he continued to manage and operate until 1988 when it was sold to Jordan Industries of Chicago, Illinois. In the early 1980's he bought and donated the Riverbend Child Care Center to the city of Iowa Falls. In 1990 he purchased the first "Empress" a 40' x 14' pontoon boat (capacity 50 passengers) and began the Iowa River and dinner cruises in hopes of providing a tourist attraction, show casing Iowa Falls as a possible site for new industry. It became essential that all the former Boat Club members were contacted to give their permission to lease the boat club dock and building itself. In 1993 the city purchased the Empress and continued to provide Iowa River cruises and a meeting place for gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Fadya Hamad, his three children: Georgia (Andrew) Howard of Los Gatos, CA; Jesse (Jazlyn) Fitz of Des Moines, IA; and Laura Fitz of Xieman, China; six grand children: Evelyn, Olive, and Grant Howard; Sam , Iris, and Eliza Fitz; two sisters: Susan Fitz and Sally Fitz; his parents: Alan and Ida Fitz; three nieces: Katie Manning of Birmingham, AL; Amy Ites of Iowa Falls; and Melissa Schutt of Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Kidney Foundation or a favorite charity.

George was a real sweetheart! When we were in the same 6th grade class, he brought me a card and a big box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. He was too shy to give them to me during the day, so at the end of the day he asked me to hold a brown paper bag for him and then promptly took off, leaving me literally "holding the bag." Inside, a card and chocolates from one of the sweetest guys ever! I've always remembered my first Sweetheart!
