George Albert Haltiwanger

On January 9, 2023 George Albert Haltiwanger passed away at the age of 93. On Feb 28, 1929 Al was born to Leonard and Hazel Haltiwanger of Hamlet NC. He attended Hamlet High School, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Emory University School of Dentistry. Al served a two-year tour as Captain in the US Air Force Dental Corps. Affectionately known as Dr. Al he went on to open a dental practice in Rockingham, which he practiced at for 47 years. Well known and respected in his community Al continued to be very active. He was a member of the Rockingham Board of Education, Director and Treasurer of Rockingham Civitans Club, Vice President of Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, Church Council member and Finance Committee Chairman for St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamlet NC. Dr. Al enjoyed racquetball and golfing with his friends. He was an avid swimmer and love spending time on Lake Tillery. Dr. Al considered the Beth Haltiwanger Conference and Retreat Center one of his greatest accomplishments. In honor of his late daughter Beth he partnered along with Pfeiffer University to create a place groups and corporations could go to attend personal development. The Retreat provided recreation and challenge courses, creating trust, cooperation, and teambuilding skills to better the community and workplace.

Al is survived by his wife Peggy, his son Albert, J. and grandson Taylor, daughter Beverly, (Robbie) and grandson Christian. Al was predeceased in death by his parents, his first wife Jean, his brother Bill, his daughter Beth and his grandson Cody. The family would like to express a sincere appreciation to the staff and residents at The Gilead Assisted Living Facility in Mount Gilead NC. Cremations services are being handled by Carolina Cremations and a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
