GEORGE HAMBRICK Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 15, 2022.

On March 3, 1944, GEORGE CHARLES HAMBRICK entered this world as the second child of late Harold Hambrick, Sr., and Mary Ellen
Clark Hambrick. George was born at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, across the lake from his parents’ hometown of
Slidell. As a young boy growing up in the 1940s, it was necessary to use and explore every possibility without fear. George, the explorer,
was like a quiet storm waiting to impact the world. He loved photography and often took pictures because most people did not own a
camera, so he became the master in the camera’s eye.
“G.C.,” as we called him, loved adventure and science. He represented St. Tammany students in various competitions in the areas of
math and science. He knew how to convince you that he knew what he was talking about. He could fix anything that was broken. His
brain worked well in that way and there was no one to match his intelligence. Can you imagine George as the superintendent of the
Sunday school at Mt. Olive A.M.E.? His cousins remember that he did an excellent job.
“He was always, not just smart, but smarter than everybody else around.”
-Cousin, Jerry Peters
George moved from Louisiana to Los Angeles in 1960, where he met the love of his life, Jacqueline Washington. She was working at the
neighborhood taco stand where George would regularly order tacos with no cheese. George and Jacqueline dated for several years, and
were married August 14, 1966. To that union were born three children, Sheldon Lemar, Sharon Tamika, and Sheryl Lynn.
George attended Los Angeles City College, earning an Associate of Arts degree. In 1964 he worked in construction for Union Local 25
as a trainee, apprentice, and journeyman, working in the LA Basin on such projects as bus stations, Union Bank, and the ATT High
Rise.
In 1968, he went to work at IBM starting as a computer operator trainee. While employed at IBM in his position as a market support
manager, George was awarded a $150,000 Suggestion Award for designing a computer program that saved the corporation several
million dollars.
After his retirement from IBM in the 1990s, George went into partnership with a former IBM employee, Grace Vaswani, as vice
president of Santa Barbara Applied Research (SBAR), a technical support services company focusing on engineering, IT, and logistics.
In 1996 the Small Business Administration and SCORE honored SBAR as the “Business of the Year” at the 14th annual Advocate
Awards Breakfast.
It was always George’s desire to have a family business. Being the ambitious and enthusiastic entrepreneur that George was, he started
The Hambrick Group (THG) in 2009, specializing in government contracting. He worked alongside his daughter, Sheryl; brother,
Harold Jr.; and cousin, Edward Windsor.
George loved photography and would be called upon to photograph many social events. Many of the pictures he took while traveling
the country were published in a coffee table book. George was very adventurous, taking the family on camping trips to Yosemite and
on exciting and memorable vacations to Hawaii, Cancun, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. George was a jack of all
trades. His other favorite pastimes included golfing, cooking, construction, drawing, painting, and mentoring the young people in his
family. George was known for his great sense of style. He loved to shop and he sure knew how to dress! George had a pretty extensive
and unique car collection, including his 1981 DeLorean. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he had many convinced that he actually could go
“Back to the Future.”
George was a true family man, showing his love and compassion in many ways. George and his wife, Jacqueline, hosted countless
holiday and birthday gatherings and opened their home to many family members when they needed a place to stay. George, oftentimes
described as a big ol’ teddy bear, was a very humorous man. He would have the family laughing around the big wooden dining room
table that he built with his own strong hands. He also seemed to know something about EVERYthing. You would often hear him telling
someone, “What you need to do is...” George stressed the importance of showing and telling others how much you loved them. He made
a huge impact on all who knew him, and he will truly be missed.
George leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Jacqueline Washington Hambrick; three children, Sheldon Hambrick (Cassandra),
Sharon Hambrick, and Sheryl Hambrick; one granddaughter, Audrey Hambrick; a sister, Kathe Hambrick; brothers, Donald and
Darryl Hambrick; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, William Jr. and Dora Strahan Hambrick, and Sam and Sarah Jefferson Clark; a brother,
Harold E. Hambrick, Jr.; and a nephew, Jeffrey T. Hambrick.

None of us know how much time
we have left on this earth.
What is left in the end are your
actions, the memories you left
behind and how you made
people feel. And what you want
to leave behind is people who remember you.
With love!

George was my boss at SBAR, he was a truly amazing man. I admired his business savvy and his knowledge. I learned a lot from him. When he walked into the room he always commanded attention, I really admired that about him too. I remember listening to music at my desk one day and when he walked by he asked me what I was listening to, I told him and the next day he brought me several cd’s for my collection. I was so surprised because before that I thought that he was intimidating. Of course I found out later that underneath all of the “bigness” of who he was, he was a really nice guy. My condolences to his family, and to all who knew him and love him. Rest well George!

Darryl and family. My sincere condolences are extended to you in the passing of your brother George. Find comfort in your fondest memories of him and the good times you spent together. Always remember that unlike us God never sees his children as dying..he only sees them as coming home. May God continue to bless you at this difficult time.
