George Ling Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2011.
LING, George McDonald, PhD November 4, 1918 - January 7, 2011 Dr. George M. Ling passed away, peacefully in his sleep, during the night of January 7, 2011, at the age of 92, in Beaconsfield, Quebec. Father to Michael Ling (Vancouver, B.C.), Tracey Ling-Morris (New York City), grandfather to Miles Quinn Morris (New York City), and brother to his sisters, Yuklan Cheong (Stanley Cheong; Port of Spain, Trinidad), Tse Mei Ling (New York City), Joyce Bell (Selwyn Bell; Beaconsfield, Quebec) , Bernice LuQui (Dr. Ivan LuQui; Florida) and Kim Singh (Dr. V.J. Singh; Vancouver, BC), as well as to his surviving brother, Dr. James Ling (Betty Ling; Florida). Fondly remembered by his long time friend and companion, Sheila Stewart (Scotland). He will be deeply missed by them, his nieces and nephews, and by the entire extended Ling clan who are spread all over the globe. He was predeceased by his sister Sybil, and his brother Carl. George was the eldest child of Evelyn Agatha Ling (nee, Roach) and James Ling, of Port of Spain, Trinidad. Always a good student and hard worker, he was the pride of his parents and the first of the Ling family to leave the island to study abroad, paving the way for many of his siblings. A graduate of McGill University and the University of British Columbia, Dr. Ling began his career in the Faculty of Medicine of UBC (1962-65), becoming Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 1965, took up posts with the World Health Organization, and the United Nations in the 1970s and 1980s, and finished his professional career at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, in Penang in the late 1980s. He retired to Mississauga, Ontario where he lived until early 2009 when he moved to Beaconsfield, Quebec. Until the end, handsome and playful, George delighted in sharing stories of his professional adventures, flirting with the ladies, singing old Calypso, and dancing. A memorial tribute was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad in February of this year. A Celebration of Life will be held in Toronto, Canada later this summer. Donations may be made to a university scholarship program or charity of your choice.

With sadness I learn of the passing of my great friend George at the advanced age of 92 Y...now some years ago. As a young medic, in one of my first jobs, lecturing overseas in Penang during the 1980s, I knew him on a professional basis. George was a well loved and highly respected personality. He was a great inspiration.....he loved the life to the fullest and often enjoyed a dance with the ladies at the Casuarina lobby, Penang (on one occasion, his daughter Tracy visited and joined the evening, I tend to remember). He was generous and good natured, lending me money without any hesitation, to buy a car in Penang, soon after my arrival on the island. Once back in Europe, I met him in Sloane Square area, London, in the early 1990s...and at the occasion he was jovial as always. George had a general flair to put you at ease and he exhibited great poise and decorum. As- after 40 years - I get to the end of my current duties and prepare to take up a university teaching job once again, my thoughts are with George, who I view as a great mentor and wise man....who walked the path before me Thankful to have had opportunity to know George. In my memory ! RIP

I knew him briefly in the 1990s, and am very sad to have discovered he has left us.
Fundamentally a good man. Fundamentally kind.
Sadly missed.

My condolences to Dr. Ling's family. You were our next door neighbours in the 1960's on Genoa in North Vancouver. Michael, you were one of my playmates when we were 4. Your dad had an amazing life - my aunt in Montreal sent his obituary to our family. What a remarkable man! He accomplished so much and contributed to helping so many. He will be greatly missed.

To the Ling family!
My condolences on Dr.Ling's passing. I met him in 1951 when I lived at Frank's place on Friel st. in Ottawa, he lived there as well. At that time he was a sales rep for pharmacology products, was very popular with the ladies,as I constantly had to take phone messages for him.He always had a smile on his face, especially when driving his car.
He was a very fine gentleman.
