George Mountcastle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2019.
George William Coan Mountcastle, 86, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2019, in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his loving family.

George was born April 4, 1932 in Winston-Salem, NC to Kenneth Franklin and May Coan Mountcastle. He attended Summit School and graduated from Woodberry Forest School in June 1950. He was a proud Tarheel and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954. After two years of service in the Air Force ROTC, he entered Wake Forest University Law School in 1957. He later began his own law practice specializing in taxation, trusts and estate planning.

George married Caroline Adelia Winburn on June 25, 1966. He was completely devoted to her for 49 years until her passing on January 20, 2016. From this union, three wonderful children were born: Randall Winburn Mountcastle (married to Lori) of Charlotte, NC, Caroline Mountcastle Carlson (married to Matt) of Arlington, VA, and May Mountcastle Webb (married to Brad) of New York, NY. George was blessed with eight grandchildren: Ella Ashe Mountcastle, Grace Coan Mountcastle, Eliza Winburn Carlson, Robert Mountcastle Carlson, George Wesley Carlson, Emily Dyer Carlson, Grey Winburn Webb and Finley Ann Webb.

George was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Franklin Mountcastle, Jr., of New Canaan, CT.

George was an accomplished golfer, beginning in early childhood. He was Captain of the golf team at UNC, played in a NCAA championship, the PGA Summer Tour and won several club championships. He played over 50 of Golf Digests' top 100 best courses in the world. George traveled to England and Scotland nearly 20 times and Ireland 12 times to play golf. The friendships he made and developed in the game were some of his most cherished. In addition to golf, he had a great appreciation of the arts, a gift from his mother. He enjoyed immensely his travel adventures and the sharing of these in many authored journals for his children. Music was a source of great enjoyment for George, and he and his wife were committed supporters of the Winston-Salem Symphony.

The family would like to thank all of his caregivers for their love and devotion during the last few months of his life. They also express heartfelt gratitude to Kathy Justice, who has been professionally and personally devoted to George for nearly 40 years.

There will be a private burial followed by a Celebration of Life at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 1PM on Friday, February 1th, 2019. A reception for all family and friends will be held at Old Town Club following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Arts Council of Winston-Salem or the Winston-Salem Symphony.

Arrangements are being handled by Salem Funerals and Cremation. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.
