George Newman

George P. Newman, resident of Collington in Mitchellville, MD passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023. George was born in Vienna Austria on June 1, 1937. Two years later, he and his mother and aunt escaped the Nazi annexation of Austria, and emigrated to the United States, where his father had arrived a year earlier. They settled in Springfield, Massachusetts, and George graduated from Springfield's Classical High School. He attended McGill University, and Columbia University's School of Journalism. George then served two years in the United States Army, stationed in France.

A long-time resident of Clinton, New York, George was a reporter, city desk editor, and editorial editor for the Utica Daily Press and Utica Observer-Dispatch for 16 years. Prior to that, he was a reporter with the Associated Press and served as a public information officer with the U.S. Peace Corps.

George retired early from the newspaper business and sat for the foreign service exam with applicants who were half his age. He was successful and joined the U.S. State Department's U.S. Information Agency, where he worked from 1992 to 2002 when he retired. He served in Austria, Germany, Togo, and Zambia.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Fairchild, step-daughter Leslie Johnson (Mel), son Jonathan Newman (Kasia), step-daughter Shannon Rogers (Mike), stepson Jerry Green, and his granddaughters Kalina, Eva and Alexa. He was predeceased by his father Walter Newman, mother Emmy Newman, and step-son Todd Newman.
