George Odell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2011.
Odell, George Hamley Age 69. Passed away unexpectedly at home in Tulsa, OK, October 14, 2011. Preceded in death by parents, Grace and Allan Odell. Survived by loving wife, Frieda Vereecken, and brothers, Allan Evans Odell of Redding, CA and Clinton (Carol) Odell of Edina, MN. George graduated in 1960 from Edina East High, received his BA and MAT from Yale and his PhD in Anthropology/Archaeology from Harvard. He taught in Beirut, Lebanon, Zug, Switzerland, Winchester, MA, U of B.C., Vancouver, and Brown University. He moved to The University of Tulsa in 1984 as Associate Prof., then became Prof. of Anthropology in 1997 where he remained until his death. He received many citations and honors during his career including the 2005 Excellence in Archaeology Analysis Award given by the Society for American Archaeology. He wrote the book "La Harpe's Post" in 2002, a tale of French-Wichita contact on the eastern U.S. plains. George was not only a wonderful teacher, but an excellent athlete, loved music, and had a superb singing voice. His greatest attribute was his ability to relate to his students, family and friends. George was just starting to adjust to his coming retirement. His death has deprived us of a truly special person. Those who knew him, loved him. He died way too early and will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM Thursday, October 27, 2011 at All Souls Unitarian Church, 2952 South Peoria St., Tulsa, OK 74114. Memorials are preferred to "Doctors Without Borders" in care of All Souls Unitarian Church, Tulsa.

My sincere condolences to George's family. George was one of my freshman roomates and fellows at Trumbull. He was always kind to me as a Texas country hick and I will always remember his retort to me when I complained about his playing that horrid jazz--"Jazz is the wrong notes played in the right way."
