George Omohundro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 24, 2016.
SHERMAN - Graveside funeral services for George Russell "Rusty" Omohundro will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 25 at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. David Ellis will officiate and military honors will be provided by the US Army. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Country Club immediately following the funeral. Mr. Omohundro, 69, passed away Sunday, August 21 at the Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home.

Rusty was born November 2, 1946 in Washington, DC to the late Read and Patty (Rinehart) Omohundro. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1964 and served four years in the US Army including one tour in Vietnam. Following his military service, Mr. Omohundro went to work at Halliburton Oil. After a few years, he moved back to Sherman and joined the family business at Woodlawn Country Club. Rusty worked at Woodlawn until declining health forced his retirement.

Rusty enjoyed all sports, especially golf. He loved to cook and was especially fond of his three dogs, Pard, Brandy, and Missy.

Mr. Omohundro is survived by two sons, Read Omohundro and his wife Nicky of Oklahoma City and Brad Riley of Dallas; five grandchildren, Gavin, Paige, Broderick, Alec, and Tarrant Omohundro; step-mother, Sandra Omohundro of Sherman; brother, Sale Omohundro and wife Linda (whom he considered his best friend) of Sherman; sister, Jennifer Wilson of Sherman; step-brother, Jim Kissinger and wife Aleda of the Woodlands; and step-sister, Sara Engel and husband Brian of Sherman. He is also survived by his nephew, Michael Omohundro of Sherman; niece, Staci Rhoades of Sherman; and several cousins including Trisha Henshaw and Cathy King, both of Joplin, Missouri. Rusty was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rebecca Omohundro Redden; and step-sister, Cynthia K. Omohundro.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Bonham VA nurses, Brittany and Mark and to American Best Care Hospice for the excellent care they provided Rusty. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Texoma Pets Lost and Found.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Omohundro family with the passing of Rusty. He was a classmate of mine from Washington Elementary School through Sherman High School. He will be remembered for his blue suede shoes, his Alfalfa haircut and his wonderful personality. My God be with his children, grandchildren and family.

So sad to read of the passing of Rusty. He was one of the nicest young men I ever met. He was a lofty senior when my 1966 SHS class of lowly Sophmores moved up as "Wildcats" from Piner Jr High (and "to be fair" also "Trojans" from Dillingham Jr High) to then learn and swear allegiance to become "Bearcats" at Sherman High. He was always warm and welcoming and so helpful to us as we absorbed so much change to acclimate to this new, and very "older" environment. It was people like Rusty who were so patient with all our "newbie" endless questions of where is the film room, how do I find the library, cafeteria, lockers, and a myriad more. I'm glad he had a long life filled with many interesting experiences and a family of his own. Sherman was a special place to grow up and Rusty was a great friend to so many of us, especially those of us whose lives took them to other life and reitrement venues. But Sherman will always be "Home"!!
