George Pierce, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2023.
George "Preston" Pierce, Jr., born 1949 in Pueblo, Colorado to George and Irene Pierce, passed peacefully in Boulder surrounded by family on January 2, 2023.

Preston truly embodied what it means to be a servant leader and dedicated his life to family, community, and church. His service to the church included being an elder, teacher, bible study leader and preacher. He was a humble, kind, and genuine soul with a great sense of humor who was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone, even if they didn't ask.

In addition to being a wonderful father who loved bragging about his two children Phillip and Christy, Preston also served as an honorary father and grandfather to many around the world. He cherished his role supporting friends, family, and strangers as a volunteer tutor, babysitter, car mechanic, lawn mower, snow shoveler, handyman, and mentor. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through his brand new grandson, Yara, who we know will grow up hearing countless stories about his legendary Grandfather Preston.

He had a successful career that in many ways began in the 1970's as a counselor, recruiter, and summer camp director at his beloved community-based youth service organization Shiloh in New York. It was there where Preston met many of his lifelong friends and his wife Janet. Those 6 years at Shiloh impacted him so deeply that almost everything reminded him of that time and his vivid and endless stories about it made others feel like they were there as well.

After moving to Boulder in the 1980's with Janet, he worked as an electrical engineer, manager, and leader at dozens of companies where he helped develop innovative products including early versions of the respirator and pulse oximeter - both used to support Preston in his final hours.

Like a good native Coloradan, Preston loved the outdoors, biking, skiing, swimming, and camping. He ran the Bolder Boulder over 25 times including after open-heart surgery, and this year with his 99-year old father. He enjoyed travels and adventures that exposed him to new sights, food and cultures.

Preston will be remembered for his radiant smile, contagious laugh, warm hugs and rare gift of making everyone feel welcome and safe. He was an engaged listener and encouraged everyone to be the best version of themselves without passing judgment.

He is survived by his 99 year-old parents George and Irene, wife of 44 years Janet, son Phillip (Roxana), daughter Christy, grandson Yara, sisters Mary and Linda (Alan), brother Craig (Judy) and 8 nieces and nephews.

Words will never capture all that he meant to his family and community.

My first memory of Preston is when I met him as the Director of Camp Shiloh. In Nashville, he soon became the boyfriend of my roommate Janet, and we all had some great times together. Preston was known as an extremely eligible bachelor, and Janet was his choice. After they married and moved to Colorado, I didn´t get to see them very often through the years. But we always stayed in touch, and I never forgot what a huge influence they both had on me. Preston was and is a beautiful soul, and I´m so grateful to have known him. Thank God, he lives forever.

So I did not know him personally, I knew of his wonderful reputation for kindness, integrity, and generosity, through mutual friends. Stunned to hear of his untimely passing. Hoping for peace of heart and mind for his family.

I was a schoolmate of Preston's in Pueblo. He was such a nice person. He took me for a ride on his horse, Bird, around the area of his Big Hill home. Every time I saw him since, he would share his faith. A good and faithful servant, he showed God's love on earth.

I'm so sorry for the loss of a special man, and my uncle. Ever the servant, he will be missed. But, I know he is rejoicing in heaven in all of God's glory.

To the Pierce Family:
I am a voice from the Pueblo past youth group - Kathy (Bomar) Hamm. After reading Preston's celebration of life, I can readily see that he hasn't changed a bit from our long ago youth group! He indeed always had the best smile and the fun-loving personality to go with it! Please accept my most sincere condolence at his passing. It's my prayer for all your amazing memories of Preston to continue to give you peace and comfort.

Saw Preston at grocery store during Christmas holidays in 2014. My family went to Co for Christmas. He was suprised when I said hello to him. Such a sweet man caring and a strong example to others. So sorry for your loss. We know he is with our Lord! God Bless you all. You are in my prayers! Janet Holt Stanley

I count myself amongst the lucky ones whose life path was impacted by the incomparable Preston Pierce. Preston planted in me the seeds of service and a love of the world beyond our borders. Little did he know that his advice and stories of his time in Ireland would eventually lead me to meeting my husband in Ireland and now serving as a diplomat out in the world. Thank you, Preston, for pouring yourself into mentoring young people over the years. You taught us all that no dream or idea was unreachable.

You have left us too soon, but we all know there was a celebration when Heaven welcomed you home.

One of our favorite memories with Preston is when we were interviewing for the job of youth ministry at Boulder Valley. Not yet graduated or married, born and raised in Texas, we came to visit Boulder, CO for the first time, and our first meal was with Preston and his son, Phillip. And they took us to a sushi place on Pearl Street... Meat-and-potatoes kind of kids, we had no idea what we were doing or eating. But it was a great time of laughter and learning new things/people. From that time, we have many great memories and stories with Preston. We love him and Janet dearly. We are beyond thankful for their mentorship in our lives, their continued love and support for us, their grace for us as we made many mistakes in ministry (and life), their encouragement and honesty. We are better people because of Preston and Janet.

I met Preston when I was in 3rd grade and started attending Boulder Valley. He was always encouraging and always interested in my life and always was encouraging to see me succeed. He was an amazing person and this news breaks my heart. I know he is home now.

Whoever wrote this did a wonderful job of sharing his light with the world. What a great word/picture. I understand why you´re feeling the loss, Matt and Becky and Jack. Prayers for all of his family, those who were blessed to know him, and especially you three.

I worked with Preston for a few years at Puritan-Bennett in Boulder back in the 1990s. He was such a delightful guy, and, as we shared our Christian faith, also an encourager. It's been 30 years since then, and though I lost touch with him when my family moved out of state, I could never forget the special man that Preston Pierce was. My deepest condolences to the family -- I know you're all going to miss him so much. It's wonderful that we can all be reunited with him again one day. Prayers for your comfort.

Preston was one of a kind...a brilliant, funny, kind and generous man. He was also very blessed in that he married the equally wonderful Janet Christie. My heart is broken to hear that I won´t see him again in this life, but I look forward to seeing his smile in the next. God speed, Preston!!
