George Sanders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 14, 2025.
George Irvin Sanders was granted his angel wings on January 11th, 2025 in his home in Romulus, Michigan. George was born in South Bend, Indiana on January 8th, 1955. He grew up between Gary, Indiana, and Ethel, Mississippi, and later moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he attended and graduated high school.

Throughout the years, the love for his parents and sister was clear, celebrated and cherished. He cared for and supported his parents and sister in every way possible, throughout their entire lives. When he wasn't with or caring for his family, George owned and operated his own lawn care company, and worked many additional laborious jobs, including General Motors, PlastiPak, Absopure and FedEx, where he retired from his longest career as a semi truck driver. He didn't choose a restful, early retirement - and he wouldn't have it any other way. He spent his years post-retirement very involved in his grandchildren's lives, as well as enjoying every imaginable house project with his kids. He and Jonathon had a particularly special connection later in life, building their many dreams and ideas into reality. He loved spending time outdoors, traveling, helping others and making memories with his family. He also maintained various hobbies, and loved building and engaging with communities on the Internet.

George was a man of many skills, talents, admirable qualities and boundless love. A keeper and collector of personal treasures only he understood the value and importance of. George always took the opportunity to lend an ear, a helping hand or words of wisdom to those in need. He opened his home and heart to almost any human or pet, and while most would shy away from the unknown or unexpected, George seemed to welcome it with open arms. He could walk into any store or business and make perfect strangers feel like family. He loved to tell stories of his past, of his kid's and grandkid's accomplishments, and never missed an opportunity to tell a dad joke. Even in his hardest, most trying moments, George maintained his healthy sense of humor, stayed fiercely independent, and fought as hard as he could to stay a little longer with his family. He was resilient, strong and unapologetically himself. His laugh and quick wit made everyone around him laugh. His patience and work ethic were unmatched. His life was full of color, complexities and challenges, and anyone who knew him, knew he found a way to make the impossible, possible.

Truth is, there will never be enough words to describe what George meant to all of us. He was a beloved father, grandfather and friend to all, and his memory will live on in our hearts and mind forever.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Irene and Robert Sanders, and his sister, Loura. Survived by his children: Jonathon, Shawn, Tashanda, Melissa and Cassie; and his grandchildren: Braxton, Sierra, Dakota, Alyssa, Brayden, and Brooklynn.

Additional information and details to follow at a later date for a celebration of life gathering.

Our dad was eccentric, not in a flamboyant way, but that he didn't conform to the standard of the norm. In the same way he loved us as his kids. He didn't do things the way anyone else would think he should, but rather was a guy who held dear every single thing his kids did for him, with him and the smallest accomplishments they made and he kept some sort of momento that we none knew until he was no longer here and everything had to be sorted. I think he knew we would see them!
He did not speak ill of others when they were not around to defend themselves, but would rather let you see, in time, for yourself the truth. If we thought he wasnt there, he actually was, but sometimes it didnt look like what we thought it should. He was so quick to forgive and give the benefit of the doubt, that it would sometimes get him hurt. I am my fathers son and pray that i can honor him by being a man of integrity as he was. He was a great dad and friend. I want to say thank you dad, im thankful to have been your son. Your laugh was contagious and smile was inviting, your friendship was a privilege and your being my dad, our dad was a girt from God. I miss you, we miss you! I love you, we love you.

This one is a hard one to write Dad , as your oldest child i have lots of memories , our Sunday rides on your motorcycle and u tucking me in front of you putting my feet on the gas tank, the many trips to our favorite pumpkin patch ,when the storms would come at night and us kids would be scared you would have us count the seconds between the lightening and thunder so we knew it was going away , and every weekend you put up with us wanting to watch our favorite movies over and over again (The secret of Nimb) ,the weekends we got to turn the storage shed into our clubhouse and run thru the woods , and the dad jokes were abundant .I never thought this possible because you have always been the healthiest, strongest man I knew. RIH Dad
