George Savramis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 20 to Sep. 23, 2017.
BOCA RATON, Fla. - George Nicholas Savramis, of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2017, surrounded by his family. George was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on July 12, 1925. He was the son of the late Nicholas and Mary (Kacoyanis) Savramis.

He left Portsmouth High School during his senior year to join the U.S. Navy to serve his country during World War II, then returning to Portsmouth to complete high school. He went on to continue his education at the Bryant & Stratton Business School as well as the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and then returned to Portsmouth to join the family business; working with his father at the Victory Spa restaurant on State Street.

He married Anastasia Raizes of Rochester, N.H., on March 3, 1957. They settled in Dover where he established the Dover Home Center, a furniture store which he operated for over 25 years. In retirement, George lived in Gilford, N.H. and later in Boca Raton, Fla. He had such an endearing personality, creating wonderful, lasting friendships through every stage of his life. He loved working in his furniture store with so many of his customers becoming personal friends.

He also loved to travel and looked forward to planning an annual summer family vacation, the destination often a last minute surprise revelation to his young children. He continued to travel to new places throughout his retirement with his wife, family, and friends, old and new. He took up boating in his retirement and enjoyed circling the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee with family and friends on board. He loved to draw, sketch, and paint and created a number of paintings now cherished by his family. He was the magnet that drew people to the "round table" at the pool in Boca. He will be truly missed.

George was a member of Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, where he was a past member of the Board of Directors and a member of AHEPA. He was also a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge and the Bektash Shrine, 32 degree and Scottish Rite.

He is survived by and was devoted to his loving wife of over 60 years, Anastasia; son Nicholas and wife Debra, grandchildren George, Charlie, Anna, and Elizabeth of River Forest, Ill.; daughter Karen and husband Mark Pendergast of Berwick, Maine, and son Peter and wife Cheryl, grandchildren Alexandra, Ariana, and Isabella of Bethesda, Md. He is also survived by his sister Emilie Raizes as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held Friday, September 22, 2017. from 4-7 p.m., at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., in Dover, N.H., with Trisagion at 4:30. We'll remember George:

Sitting on his Gilford, N.H. stoop, always ready to share a smile and good story.

His and Stasia's generosity sharing a great meal at their Dining Room table.

As among the very finest of neighbors. Always thought of with admiration and love.

Sincerely, John and Doreen O'Connor, Gilford N.H.

My best memory of George was this story of the many he told. George started his furniture store with no inventory or customers. He went to a manufacturer in Boston to buy some furniture. The salesman asked him if he had credit. George answered what's credit. The salesman answered dun & Bradstreet George answered who is he. The salesman asked how he would pay. George said CASH. The rest is history

I was saddened to hear of George's passing. I remember being in his store many times in the late 60's and early 70's where we bought a whole houseful of furniture. He even delivered furniture and let you try it for a week or two with no deposit, no receipt. He was always smiling and very cheerful every time we stopped in and always had a joke or witty saying to share. He referred to himself once as "the golden Greek of Central Avenue". He was truly a unique individual and I'm sure he will be missed by all who knew him. My condolences to his family.
