George Steele Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2024.
George Prestren Steele died peacefully in hospice on March 19, 2024, in Schaumburg, Illinois, at the age of 94.

George was preceded in death by his parents Glen and Eileen (nee Benbow), his wife Aileen (nee Miller), and his daughter Janet (Patrick) Wade of Grayslake, IL. He is survived by his sons Thomas (Susan) of Bartlett, IL, Mark (Ruth) of Denver, CO, and Michael of Rockledge, FL, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

George was born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois, back when it was a thriving railroad town. He attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, where he met his college sweetheart and future wife Aileen Miller of the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. He graduated college in 1951 with a degree in Business Administration-Marketing then enlisted into the Army. He served for three years and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant with his most significant assignment being Atomic Weapons Electronics Officer. After discharge, he settled in the Chicago area with Aileen, whom he married in 1952, and their children. He worked for many years as a salesman, first of office machines then pharmaceuticals. In 1972, he became his own boss when he opened a Taylor Rental Store (equipment and party goods rentals) in Hanover Park, later opening a second store in Glendale Heights. He left Taylor Rental to his sons Tom and Mike to run after his retirement. Taylor Rental was in business for 49 years before closing in 2021. He enjoyed a long retirement splitting his time for many years between the Chicago area and Ft. Myers, Florida. He lived at Friendship Village in Schaumburg the last 16+ years and spent many of them as the weekly Bingo caller for the residents.

Relatives and friends are invited to visitation at 10:00 a.m and a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at St. Hubert Church, 729 Grand Canyon, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169, with a luncheon to follow. The family would like to thank all the staff members at Briarwood in Encore Village who cared for him the last weeks of his life. They were exceptional. Our Condolences to hear of his passing. He will be remembered always as my first employer and mentor to hard work and taking responsibility. He was firm yet fair and had a kind heart. I have thought back to him often to this day and still love to wash dishes! RIP George

Where to start! I started dating Don Miller ( Aileen´s brother ) in 1961 & eventually came to know Don´s oldest sister Aileen, her husband George & their 4 children. The senior Steele´s, George´s Mom& Dad, would drive over to Peoria from Galesburg to visit with all of us. We became fast friends.
My parents, Chuck & Mel Shank had a week end gathering of the entire Miller/ Steele families. We some how found places for all to party & sleep (by this time the majority of the family lived in Chicago while the Shank family lived in Peoria, IL.) The Steele children stayed in Galesburg with the senior Steele´s with the exception of Mike who was just a baby & stayed close by his Mom & Dad (George & Ai). Well, this was the beginning of a great friendship between the Miller/ Steele family.

If I remember Don Miller, Sr was the ring bearer in George & AI´s wedding. This was before my time & Don was probably about 4 years old.

The Senior Miller Longbeach, Indiana home was the summer abode for all families for years. Talk about each week end being a party - wow - it was the place to be. Bring a bathing suit & towel & perhaps a " bottle of "happy juice" & one was set for a week end of fun.
Don & I were fortunate enough to take an Alaskan cruise with George & Ai the summer before Ai passed. It was the perfect way to remember both of them together. I still have a letter Ai wrote me in case she didn´t make it through her surgery. I never expected the worse to happen!
A few years back we helped George celebrate his 80th birthday at a celebration at Tom & Sue´s home. I thought that birthday was a mile stone in life!!! George had his way of carrying on in life. He moved to Friendship Village, eventually gave his car to grandkids & made a new set of friends & was the "bingo caller". I never heard him complain in all the years I knew him (of course I was never around him at Taylor Rental). He & Ai raised 4 wonderful children, enjoyed their grandchildren & are now once together again. I thank God for their existence in my life. Between Galesburg, Peoria, Chicago, Longbeach & their eternal life my life has been enrichedwill always miss them
