George Stern Obituary

Dr. George I. Stern of San Antonio died peacefully on January 4, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara "Bobi" of 45 years, son, Matthew, daughter Rachel Stern and son-in-law Scott Pullen, six adoring grandchildren, Mara, Jake, Gabe, Lainey, Maddie and Charlie, all of San Antonio. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Iris and Warren Lieberman, two nephews, Evan and Mark, and many friends. Born on January 8, 1941 George was raised in New York City and entered the public school system speaking only German. At age 15 he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. He earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from New York University at the age of 19 and then attended 2 years of Law School at NYU. He then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering followed by Masters degrees in both mechanical and electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at NYU before entering New York Medical College. During this time George worked as an Engineer for the US Army Corps of Engineering from 1962 to 1970. He came to San Antonio for his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in obstetrics and gynecology in 1974 and was in private practice from 1978 until his retirement in 2009. He delivered thousands of babies during his career and is remembered as a skilled and caring physician who saved many lives and took great pride in the people and families he was able to help over the years of his practice. Dr. Stern loved to travel and was a great storyteller and avid reader. He was a great supporter of the Jewish Community. He will be missed for his kindness, generosity and dedication to his family and profession. He had a dry but active sense of humor and he loved to laugh, especially at his own jokes. MEMORIAL SERVICE THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 2010 2:30 P.M. CONGREGATION AGUDAS ACHIM 16550 HUEBNER ROAD Rabbi Leonardo Bitron, Rabbi David Komerofsky, and Hazzan Lipton officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the Charlie Pearl Fund at the San Antonio Jewish Community Center, 12500 NW Military Highway or a charity of your choice. A private interment will be held at Temple Beth-El Memorial Park on January 7, 2010.

Dr. Stern delivered my son on April 19, 1983. Loved Dr. Stern he was very caring. A great doctor.
