George Vlandis, 87, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at his Brightwater residence in Myrtle Beach, SC.
George was born February 19, 1929 in Bridgeport, CT, the son of the late William and Rose Vlandis.
George was a 1950 graduate of the University of Connecticut where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree.
George married Iris Macheras of Lynchburg, VA in 1955. After their marriage, he and Iris took residence in Stamford, CT where they lived for 58 years. George had a very successful career in the shipping industry. He worked his last 23 years with OMI Corp where he was head of chartering and a member of the Board of Directors.
George was an active member of the Greek Orthodox community at the Church of The Archangels in Stamford, CT, where he served as the President of Building Fund and countless other committees as needed. He was also a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Myrtle Beach.
George was an accomplished pianist who loved to play on any occasion. He was also a very handy craftsman who would willingly help his family and friends fix or build anything.
George was predeceased by his wife Iris in November 2010. George raised four loving and grateful children who were blessed to call him father. Surviving are Thalia Vlandis Sanderson of Myrtle Beach, William Vlandis and
his wife Penolope of Myrtle Beach, Harry Vlandis and his wife Tiffany of Fairfield, CT and Peter and Mary Vlandis of Lynchburg, VA; 10 grandchildren who will always remember their "Pappou", Simeon Sanderson (San Francisco, CA); Stephanie, Nicholas, Angela and Alexander Vlandis (Myrtle Beach); Phillip, Spencer and Alex Vlandis (Fairfield, CT) and Bethany and Logan Vlandis of Lynchburg, VA.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016 at McMillan Small Funeral Home with a 6:30 p.m. Trisagion.
A funeral service will be help on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 10:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at Southern Palms Memorial Gardens.
