George Watson Obituary

Published by Spectrum & Daily News from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2019.
George H Watson

St. George - Heaven was blessed with a true Irish gentleman on October 29, 2019 when George Hamilton Watson passed away peacefully from the effects of Parkinson's disease, surrounded by his "Girls"—wife Chloë and daughters Sharon, Ruth, and Miriam.

George was born on September 20, 1935 in Dublin, Ireland to George Hugh Watson and Gladys Elizabeth Hamilton. As a child growing up in Ireland, he loved scouting, cricket, rugby, and seaside holidays with his mum, dad, and big sister Eva. Following his graduation from The High School, Dublin, George studied Geotechnical Engineering at Trinity College where he earned his PhD in 1962 and later an honorary Doctor of Science in 1981.

In 1954, George won a blind date with Chloë in a card game—and apparently their date went well! Their girls loved to hear how he cycled ten miles one way each Sunday to visit her. They were married six years later and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary next year. George and Chloë moved to St George four years ago, after having previously resided in Stockton-on-Tees, England; Winnipeg and Calgary, Canada; and Naperville, IL—their home for 41 years.

A million miler on two different airlines, George travelled throughout the world during his career. From designing natural gas pipelines in Asia and the Middle East, to building structures on permafrost in Siberia, to constructing ice islands for oil exploration in the Arctic, George enjoyed working with others and putting his engineering knowledge to use. He could build you a hydroelectric dam, but couldn't hammer a nail in straight! George retired in 1998 after 24 years with Amoco/BP.

One of his greatest joys was working together with Chloë in LDS temples. They served as President and Matron of the Chicago Temple (2000-2004) and later as missionaries in the London, England Temple—the same temple where they had been sealed in 1961. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1959, George shared his testimony of the Savior not only through his words but also in the way he lived his life.

George was a living example of his mantra, "People matter, things don't." His wisdom, compassion and humor were evident to all who knew him. He touched the lives of countless people around the world and will be missed greatly.

George is survived by his wife, Chloë Kilroy Watson; his three daughters, Sharon (James) Maughan of Burnt Hills NY, Ruth (Lance) Hill of Kaysville UT, Miriam (David) Cole of Farmington UT; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and his nephew, Gordon (Faye) Oliver of Newbury, England.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel, 820 North Valley View Drive, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd, St. George, Utah, and prior to service from 12:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to contribute to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' General Missionary Fund.

Dear Chole, Ruth and Miriam

'' As I have loved you, Love one another''
At this Christmas time, I am deeply aware of the extent in which Love has changed my
life.
The Love of Stranger, for those in distress;
The Love of Friends, The awesome Love of The Watson family, The Love of Family;
And the ineffable Love of Our Father in Heaven as expressed in the gospel's Plan of Salvation and as Manifest in the Peace He gives In the face of devastating loss,
May His love bring to you and your family, the Peace it has brought to me;

At this time and throughout the coming days,

Robb Rogers

Chloe and Family,

We have so enjoyed reminiscing about all the memories we have of you and George living in Naperville and loving us as a young and growing family. George's legacy will always be one of love, compassion, faith and of course humor. You two provided so many of us with deep strength, love and friendship and we will be forever grateful.

May this week be full of beautiful and confirming memories and so much friend and family love.

With enormous gratitude,

Pam and Steve Caine

Among my fondest memories are those years working in the Chicago Temple when George and Chloe were the temple president and matron. They made the temple a place of love, service, and joy, even more so than it had seemed before (at least so it seemed to me). It saddens me to think that he is not still on earth in mortality, but I like to think that he is serving in another, higher capacity in the temple these days. My love and hugs and sympathy to Chloe and her family. Thank you both for the memories!

We (my mother and I) were saddened to hear that the world lost such a great man, but we are likewise very happy that heaven will now enjoy his friendly and dynamic presence. We knew him from the Naperville stake. He always had a smile, a handshake, and encouraging words every time we met. He was, and still is through memories, an uplifting influence on our faith. My dad talked about him constantly and considered him one of his closest friends, as well as a spiritual giant, both in the Church in general and in the temple work that they did together. I have attached some photos of him, Chloe, and my dad and mom at his Open House on 11 Oct 2015, before he moved from the Naperville area.

Bishop Watson changed the life of our family forever. He was instrumental in my dads decision to join the church. We are literally eternally grateful for his example and guidance. He had an impact on me as a youth. Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends- the entire Watson family.

George was our Bishop when we joined the church and our temple President when we first worked there. He always had a warm smile and handshake every time we saw him. He will always have a place in our hearts. Our condolences to Chloe and the girls. Wish we could be there to give you a hug and celebrate the life of this wonderful man.

I am so sorry to hear about Bishop Watson's passing. He was a great example to me and my family as Bishop of the Naperville second ward after I returned from my mission. I have always loved the Watson family but after I left Naperville lost touch. I express my sincere condolences to Sister Watson and her daughters and extended family.

Oh how we love George and Chloe! How can such feelings of love and gratitude be framed by mere words? But let these words ring true.... with all the luster of the sun, comes the brilliance of a new day for George. Into the Saviors arms hes gone to an everlasting work, extended and exalted! We love you George! You will be missed!

I love you my friend and will miss you beyond what you will know till I see you again. You believed in me when I felt nobody did and loved me just as much as well. Not a major memory in my life you aren't a part of. You are a great example, friend, leader, mentor, and will always be apart of my family and in my heart. You lived your life how the Saviour wants us and showed through your example how to live that life as well. As greatly missed as you will be the reunions you have had and will continue to have will be great.

My condolences to the Watson family as well as my love and prayers.
