George Wellman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2024.
In Loving Memory of George Grant Wellman.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a devoted husband, cherished father, loving grandfather and steadfast Catholic disciple, and altruistic community member, George "Grant" Wellman. Surrounded by the love of his family, Grant peacefully departed from this world on 02/09/2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, and enduring love. His personality, warm smile, and genuine care for people endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on March 5, 1946, to his parents the late Fred Wellman and the late Catherine (nee Dunn), Grant grew up in Baltimore, MD with his sister, the late Jackie Harper and her husband Jim, where he cultivated a spirit of kindness and compassion that would define his entire life Grant embarked on a successful and lengthy career at Bethlehem Steel and built a reputation for his unwavering work ethic and dedication.

Grant is survived by his wife Sheryl Miglio; and cherished father of Andrew C. Wellman and his wife Patricia "Tish"; loving grandfather of Zachary and Alexavier Wellman; stepfather to Eric Hiltpold and his wife April, and Kevin Hiltpold and his wife Adrianna Jensen; and seven grandchildren.

Predeceased by his current father-in-law Henry R. Miglio and mother-in-law Eileen; his first wife Patricia "Patsy" L. (nee Kavanagh); his first parent-in-laws Edward P. Kavanagh and Lillian E. (nee Fetsch); and father of the late Jeffrey G. Wellman and his wife Pat, and grandfather of Sean and Delaney.

An avid photographer, Grant found solace in nature and often shared this passion with his family and friends. Whether on fishing excursions, or simply strolling through the woods, he instilled in his family a deep appreciation for the beauty of God's creation which he often attempted to capture in pictures.

Grant's commitment to his spiritual journey was evident in his active participation in the parish communities, where he served as a devoted Catholic disciple, attending Mass regularly and volunteering his time to various church causes over the years. His selflessness and compassion left an indelible mark on the lives he touched, reflecting the teachings of love and service inherent in his Catholic faith.

Grant's passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. As we mourn his departure, let us also celebrate the beautiful life he led, the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him.

A funeral mass to honor George Grant Wellman's life will be held at 11am on 03/05/2024 at Our Lady of Hope. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Lewy Body Dementia Association in Grant's name.

May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and serenity he brought to all who were blessed to share in his journey.

George "Grant" Wellman was so beloved by all who encountered him at the Sunrise Reston community. He had a wonderful sense of humor, easygoing personality and the most gentlemanly ways about him. We were able to learn so much about him and see the incredible man he was not just because of knowing him in his daily life but also because of his family who regularly visited him and obviously adored him. It was an honor for the entire caregiving team to know Grant during his "twilight years" and make them the best they could be.

Mr. Grant was always so kind and gracious. He took a sincere interest in people and was truly glad to know you. I could not have asked for a better father in law to my sister Patricia, grand father to my nephews or father to Andrew. He will be thought of fondly. May peace be with all who loved him.
