Georgia Alexander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2022.
On Tuesday, March 22nd, 2022, Georgia Ann Alexander, loving mother, sister, and friend, passed away after a long illness. Born on December 31, 1953, in San Angelo, TX, Georgia was the third of five children raised by Peggy Baird, her mother, and Kimble Walters, her stepfather. Beautiful, outgoing, and outrageously funny, Georgia spent her childhood concocting wild adventures with her siblings on her parents' horse farm in the rural outskirts of Baytown, TX. As a teenager, she captained the cheerleading squad at her local high school and even once had the opportunity to cheer for the Houston Oilers. After completing courses in education at a local college, Georgia switched tracks and moved to Houston to work at El Paso Marine Company. There, in 1980, her son Tommy was born; shortly after, the family moved to Mystic, CT, where her daughter Marty was born in 1982, before settling in Jamestown, RI. As a stay-at-home mother, Georgia doted on her young children and brought a sense of wonder to their everyday lives. Later, she returned to college to complete a nursing degree that led to a 30-year career in geriatrics. Devoted to her patients, she quickly gained a reputation for encompassing empathy and care, often sneaking in a favorite treat or purchasing a needed item for them, or simply spending time at the bedside listening to their stories. This caregiving extended to her colleagues as well, to whom she was quick to lend support, including purchasing Christmas presents for the children of those grappling with tight budgets. At one point, when her stepfather became terminally ill, she uprooted her life and returned to Texas, a state with a notoriously porous social safety net, to care for him until his death.

Although she was living with a debilitating chronic disease in the last years of her life, her spirit of generosity persisted. She continued to be a vital source of support and humor for her siblings and children and to engage in small acts of kindness, such as sharing her coveted Coca-Cola sodas and candies liberally, for the nurses and aides charged with her care.

She adored hamburgers, Bruno Mars, the Patriots, Stephen King novels, Seinfeld, dogs, and gardening. She faced difficult obstacles in her life but never allowed them to diminish her capacity to empathize with others. She loved, and was loved, fiercely, and she will be missed tremendously.

In addition to her son, Tommy Alexander (Molly) and daughter, Marty Zeve (Daniel), Georgia is survived by her two grandsons, Aedan and Benny Alexander, as well as her siblings, Sherrie Sewell (Pat), Janette Goodson (Bill), Judy Walters, Johnny Walters (Debbie), and Kimble "Bucky" Walters, Jr., as well as her oldest nephew, Eric Bauman, and countless other family and friends. Her family is planning a private ceremony in Houston, TX, in the summer of 2022. In lieu of flowers, mourners may donate in her memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
