Gerald Ramon Eilers, 60, Davenport, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1506 Brown Street, Bettendorf. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Genesis Dialysis Unit or Assumption High School where a scholarship will be set up for students entering a healthcare field.
Jerry was born Jan. 3, 1944, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, a son of Martin and Ruby (Nelson) Eilers. On July 12, 1969, he married Denise Fuhrmann in Springfield, Ill. While young, his family moved to northeast Iowa where he graduated from MFL High School, Monona, Iowa, in 1961. In 1965, he graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, with a degree in Accounting. While at Loras, he became involved in various musical and dramatic productions.
As an accountant, he was employed first by Golden, Kutsunis and Hoover in Rock Island and later by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company. For the last 28 years, Jerry has been the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Watts Trucking Service based in Rock Island. Professionally, he was a member of the American Institute of Public Accountants and the Iowa Society of CPAs.
In 1971, he was listed in Outstanding Young Men of America. Additionally, he had been heavily involved in the Quad City Community. While a member of the Rock Island Jaycees, he chaired numerous committees, served as its President in 1973, State Director in 1974 and Vice President of the Greater Quint City Council. Jerry had also been Treasurer of the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, a member of the United Way Executive Committee, and Treasurer of the Illowa Council Boy Scouts. A longtime member of Pinnacle Country Club, he was an avid golfer, with 2 holes-in-one to his credit in one year.
Survivors include his wife, Denise; his son, Martin Paul Eilers, of Davenport; and six siblings, one brother, Dennis M. (Gwen) Eilers, of Luana, Iowa, and five sisters, B.K. (Steve) Gysendorfer, of Potts Camp, Miss., Karen (James) Orr, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Eileen (Tony) Dudek, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Margie (Bill) Bertrand, of Delta, Colo., and Anita (Paul) Langholz, of Clear Lake, Iowa. Jerry also has four nieces and ten nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Bernard.
