NEWTON - Dr. Gerald Saunders Feldman, O.D., "Doc", 91, of Newton, died Saturday, May 20, 2017, in the Harris Health Care Center at Bristol Glen in Newton.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Feldman graduated from high school in Brooklyn.
He was an Army combat engineer during World War II and received a field promotion to sergeant while serving under Gen. George S. Patton at the Battle of the Bulge and assisted in liberating concentration camps at the end of the war.
Dr. Feldman received his doctorate of optometry from the New England College of Optometry in 1950, at which time he moved to Newton. In 1955 he opened his private practice, Gerald S. Feldman Optometrist, on Spring Street in Newton, and retired in 2013. He and his late wife, Elinore, were the co-owners of Newton Hearing Aid Center and Dover Hearing Aid Center.
Dr. Feldman's involvement in the community was extensive and his memberships included the Newton VFW Memorial Post 5360, where he was a past commander, the American Legion Post 86, the Newton Lions Club, the Newton Kiwanis Club, the Newton Elks Club, Harmony Lodge #8 F&AM, and the Shriners. He was also a member of the Sussex County Democratic Committee, a member and past president of local B'nai B'rith, a member of Chabad of Sussex County, a former member of the Jewish Center of Sussex County, as well as a member of many professional organizations. Dr. Feldman served as the grand marshal of the Newton Memorial Day Parade in 2013.
The son of the late Meyer and Ethel (Greenberg) Feldman, Dr. Feldman was predeceased by his wife, Elinore (Coren) Feldman. He is survived by four children, Jeffrey Feldman and wife, Patricia O'Keefe, Clifford Feldman and wife, Janet Matulia, Barbara Mervine and husband, Kenrick, and Allan Feldman; his grandchildren, Alexander Feldman and wife, Katie, Benjamin Feldman, Aaron Feldman and wife, Katie, Joshua Feldman and wife, Kate, Amanda Edwards and husband, Ryan, Gabriel Mervine, Larken Mervine and Jared Feldman; his great-grandchildren, Noah, Elliot, Julia, Ariana, Emma and Belle; and his loving partner, Alice Garris, and her granddaughter, Courtney.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Cedar Park and Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave., Paramus.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.

A fine neighbor and fine doctor. I remember more than once running up the street to a friend's home and hearing out the front door "Where are your glasses young lady!?" Thank you Dr. Feldman for the years of care you provided us. Our deepest condolences to Jeff, Barbara and Allan.

i knew dr feldman since 1966 i played basketball with his son jeff always came to the games and in latter years at the vfw in newton when i came home from vietnam after serving in the us marine corp a down to earth nice guy my regards to jeff and to dr feldman rest in peace to a good man
