Gerald Stearns Harmon, 91, formerly of Old Town, Maine, passed away on August 30, 2023.

Jerry was born in Lewiston, Maine on December 24, 1931. He was the second of three children born to Carl and Helen Harmon. A graduate of Bridgton High School, Jerry received his B.A. in Physics in 1953 from the University of Maine at Orono and his Ph. D. in Physics from Texas A&M University in 1962. He taught physics at the University of Maine at Orono for forty-four years until his retirement as Associate Professor Emeritus. His research interests included radio frequency discharges in gases as well as plasma physics and electron multipacting. He mentored many graduate students and if he was not in his office assisting students, he could be found in the physics lab researching or helping others.

Jerry and his wife Dorothea were married on June 17, 1951. They were blessed with a loving family of six children. Jerry loved his work but adored his family and extended family even more. He provided many great memories of camping, hikes, trips to the shore, and family gatherings. All were welcome at his table. Jerry was known for his great wit and often chronicled special family adventures in verse.

Gerald was predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Dorothea Pingree Harmon, daughter Andrea Harmon, brother Robert Harmon, and nephews, Tim Leipold and Bradley Pingree.

He is survived by his sister Ruth Ann Leipold (husband David); daughters Beth Ward, (husband John), Jeanne Drechsel (husband Carl), Lauren Harmon; sons David (wife Mary), Tom (wife Robin); six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. A family memorial service will be held at a later date with burial in Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town, Maine.
