Gerald McLaughlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 7 to Mar. 8, 2011.
McLAUGHLIN, Gerald C. It is with heavy hearts and a great deal of sadness that our family announces the passing of Gerald C. McLaughlin on March 4, 2011 at the age of 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife Roberta (Bobby) of 51 years; daughters Cassandra; Samantha, (Doug Smith); Danielle; son Brinton, (Jennifer); and grandchildren Austin, Raquel, Connor and Jake. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta to parents Harold McLaughlin and Verna Marsden, he spent his earliest years in Picture Butte and Lethbridge. He attended St. Michael's University Boys School in Victoria, B.C. Summers were spent at Camp Inuspi in Waterton Park as a camper then counselor. High school years were spent in Calgary where he started his career in broadcasting, first at radio station CKXL, then CHCT-TV. He then moved to Edmonton, working for CFRN-TV where he met his soon-to-be wife. Early married life was spent in Winnipeg at CJAY-TV, Toronto at CFTO-TV, and finally back to Edmonton where he changed careers and became an accountant. He was so proud of his children and was a devoted grandfather. They were his greatest delight. Each summer he took his children mountain climbing in Waterton where they explored almost every mountain. The rest of the summer was spent at his other favorite place - Pigeon Lake. Many hours were spent fishing, sailing, canoeing, telling stories around the fire and visiting with his neighbors. He was an avid reader, very social and loved conversations on any and all subjects, especially history. He loved to dress, especially in his tuxedo and looked forward to the annual Heritage Ball at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, dancing to the Lethbridge Big Band. A special heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wiznura and the staff at the Links Clinic, whose caring and dedication to the whole family were exemplary. We would also like to recognize the palliative nursing staff at Alberta Health. Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 - 114 Street, Edmonton. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice. Dearest McLaughlin family,
I would like to extend our deepest condolences from our family to yours.
"Jake" was a cildhood hero of mine. As a boy I eagerly anticipated those annual summer long weekend forrays into the Waterton back country with the McLaughlin crew. And especially to the mentoring of Gerry, he was a caring, insightful, encouraging and entertaining man.
To this day I remember, very vivdly, many fireside talks we had over 25 years ago. Advice and life lessons for me that were drawn from many entertaning stories from Jake about often mis-guided adventures from his, Don P. and my dad's youth.
I feel very priviledged to have had his influence in my life. I along with you will miss him dearly.
Thanks Jake....

To the McLaughlin family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Gerry was my accountant for many years but he was also my friend. I looked forward to our visits and long conversations at tax time. I met Gerry when his office was over Audrey's bookstore. When he moved to the little basement apartment I found it difficult to get there, so Gerry would meet me at Kids in the Hall for lunch. I always enjoyed spending time with him, as he was a very interesting and knowledgable man with a wonderful sense of humor. Gerry gave me great tax advice and always undercharged me. He talked about his family alot and it was obvious how much everyone meant to him. May your memories of Gerry bring you comfort at this difficult time.

Aunty Bobby, Cassie, Sam, Brinton, Danielle,

I cannot imagine what you are feeling at this time and want to let you know that my heart breaks for your loss. Uncle Gerry was my uncle by "choice" and he was one of the best choices I could have made and am so thankful to have had him a part of my life. His loss will be felt by many and know that he touched so many people and that he was an amazing individual. I always enjoyed our conversations and more over the past number of years as I matured and was always amazed at his incredible knowledge of "life". I am so thankful that I was able to spend the time I did with him before I left on holidays. I thought of him often while I was away. My love and thoughts are with all of you. Jan

To the McLaughlin Family:
My heart goes out to you on the loss of your beloved husband, father and grandpa. It is a year ago today that my dad passed away and I miss him deeply and also trust we will be united with the Lord and all our loved ones in God's Heavenly Home.
Jerry shared his warm spirit of joy, wisdom and inspiring stories with me for many years, and I looked forward to our visits at tax time. He was very caring and I knew without a doubt, how much he loved his family and his life! Starting at his office over on 124 Street, then above Audrey's bookstore and later in the cozy apartment basement, we had much laughter and many precious conversations that I will always cherish. Making sure I was in good hands after he 'retired' from accounting, Jerry passed the 'tax torch' to Jim.
May your family find comfort and strength as you navigate the stormy seas ahead and find rest and peace knowing there are tranquil, sunny days to come. Psalm 23

Dear Brinton,
As a history buff, I'm disappointed that your Dad and I never had a chance to sit down and discuss his favourite subject.
Your Dad accomplished much in his life and leaves a wonderful legacy.
Sincere sympathy,
