Gerald Reese Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 28, 2021.
Gerald Reese Gerald (Jerry) Reese passed away March 20th at home with family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years; a son; a daughter- in-law; and two grandchildren. Jerry was born in Tulare, California, graduated high school in Oxnard, CA, and started college at College of Marin. He earned his teaching credential at San Jose State, and a masters in reading at Sonoma State. He is remembered fondly by his former students and their parents from his 50 years of teaching, mostly in Novato. He felt everyone could learn and succeed. He encouraged children as a basketball coach in CYO leagues, at Hill Junior High, and San Marin High School. He had a passion for woodworking. He made planter boxes and other items that were sold at various craft shows. He restored the horse drawn buggy currently on display at the Novato History Museum. He would spend time remodeling the house and landscaping the yard, a real DIY guy from the start. He took up watercolor painting later in life, specializing in landscape and architectural scenes. He enjoyed car rides throughout the North Bay, taking in the natural scenery and searching out items for his many collections. Jerry was a kind, gentle man who will be missed by everyone who had the great fortune to come in contact with him. There will be no service, at the request of the deceased. Any donations in his honor may be made to: Hospice by the Bay, 17 E. Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Larkspur, CA 94939, (415) 927-2273, for the wonderful assistance they gave; or, to a charity of your choice.

Working with Jerry was always a pleasure. He was a great support and mentor. Jerry brought equal measures of compassion, experience, and humor to any situation. He certainly left the world a better place and will be greatly missed.

I met with Jerry when foster youth with special Ed needs were in the Novato district. There was never a situation, no matter how tense, where Jerry’s inherent kindness and gentle nature could not make everyone feel calmer, heard, and valued. He offered folksy stories, about restoring the buggy for example, and always made me smile.

While a student at Novato High School I took Mechanical Drawing/Drafting from Mr. Reese in 1962 and 1963. He made an impression that is with me today as being a caring, very competent teacher who could be stern if required or tell a funny joke. I'm sure he will be missed by thousands of folks that he connected with over the years. RIP...
