Gerald Sachs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 13, 2018.
My dad was born December 2, 1943 in Sacramento, Calif., and died peacefully at home March 29, 2018 in San Francisco, Calif. Gerald "Jerry" James Sachs Sr., has been nothing short of a love and a delight to be around. As a child he was very inquisitive and adventurous. Though his adventures always got him in trouble more times than not, the neighborhood always saw my dad as a kid with the best nature and intent, smile, and character - and everybody just loved Jerry.

My dad had a lot of fun in high school and worked at his dad's local gas station in Roseville, Calif. - after high school he was sent to Korea. He married and had his first child, a son. Upon his return from Korea he began taking college classes and failed every single one. My dad never thought he was that smart. Eventually my dad, through his persistence, would find his niche, and complete an education to become a Radiology Technician. Just after this time my dad, always a seeker of truth and the meaning of life, my dad came upon the Baha'i Faith. After investigating multiple religions he found the faith, and it resounded with him. It in fact changed his entire life and that of my immediate family. He dedicated the rest of his life to being a Baha'i, to the Baha'i community, he was always involved in service and would give anything he had to anyone in need. My dad also worked over 35 years as an X-ray Tech at Mercy San Juan Medical Center. He worked hard and served others constantly and never ever complained. Only positivity came out of this man. Over the years he would have another child, a daughter, me... Years after that, near retirement, he met his second wife.

After his retirement he resided in San Francisco, his favorite city!

My dad loved life and always upheld a positive attitude no matter what. He loved nature, cleaning up parks, hiking, walking, bird watching, trying to spot beavers or any other type of wildlife. My dad was in awe over nature and its endless diversity.

My father celebrated diversity. He loved people, truly loved and cherished all who he met and would always give his undivided attention and care and love to people whether family, friend, or acquaintance. My dad had many talents such as his beautiful art and later in life he took up playing the ukulele, writing poetry, and he played the harmonica (my dad could draw a crowd playing on that harmonica in the middle of San Francisco). It wasn't that he was great at it - I mean he wasn't bad, but it was that spirit of his - that big bright light - his exuberant face so inviting, so happy, so wanting others to be happy too... and others could FEEL it! Next thing we know there's a group dancing and grooving to his music and my dad is striking up conversations, always meeting new people and friends.

The very best of my dad's qualities are his genuine nature, his light good-natured humor, his wisdom, intuition, and extreme form of absolute humility and attraction to simplicity.

The simplicity of my dad's life to me, is what makes it so exquisitely beautiful. Who knew a life so simple could carry so much, and be filled with so much - with meaningful things. Simplicity does not mean boring or dull or uneventful - quite the opposite. To live simply to me in my dad's life, means, to grasp the meaning of life, time, connection, and what matters most. To live a simple life takes skills, balance, wisdom, diligence, perseverance to truly understand and hold dear so many of those things so many disregard every single day in their search for greatness - not realizing sometimes they already have it. My dad always found reasons to believe his life was great and to be happy.

Jerry Sachs (JerBear) always had an ever so contagious smiling face... he never ever stopped having the excitement of a child about life - but with the wisdom of someone who'd lived through a lot and understood so much more. He made everyone feel valuable and loved. He was a sweet man who always cared more about everyone else than he did himself. He put everyone above himself - he always thought he was not the brightest of individuals... I hope now he finally really knows how truly amazing and extraordinary he is and was. He lived a good life, he was a good man, a kind man, he gave everything he had to others, made endless sacrifices, rarely talked about himself, loved to explore subjects surrounding, how do we achieve unity in the world, always stood up for others, was actually very, very, very well read - and his thoughts and ideas if he'd had the platform, definitely could have changed the world. I know in fact, he changed my world and I am forever and eternally grateful and so, so lucky to have been able to call him my dad, my best friend - to me and the rest of our family.

My dad cherished and loved greatly each and everyone of us. My dad was not one for titles to include or leave out a person and so I will simply share the names of those closest to my dad over his lifetime, whom are family: George Sachs, Lois Sachs, Bill Cetko, Leslie Trook-Sachs, Greg Sachs, Nancy Sachs, Scott (Jen) Sachs, Kensington Sachs Andy Sachs, Patricia Sachs, Jerry Sachs Jr., Amy Sachs, Kelly Sachs, Aria Bruss-Schutte, Samba Schutte, Sonny Sachs, Gia Sachs, Dawn Trook, Maya Trook, Arin Trook (Lisa), Cosy and countless other friends that are like family to him. You each know who you are...

We wish he could have stayed longer. We all miss him so much. We are happy he is free... and we know he surrounds us. The words he always said over all the years stick with us and frequently I hear and remember him always saying, "Remember, life is terribly wonderful! Keep going - you got this - you're the greatest - we give each other hope - I think so much of you - don't give up - laugh a little - hey, don't forget to smile, who loves ya!? I do!"

Buga Buga, Bogga Bogga, Booga Booga ... xxx ... until we all see each other again.

Jerry, the memory of your laugh warms my heart. It was such a joy for me to know you! When I look up at a starry sky, I'll know one of those twinkling stars is wearing a warm smile and Hawaiian shirt, playing its ukulele for us.

Jerry was my high school classmate. While on a Easter break vacation from Sierra College we took a deep sea fishing trip to Ensenada, Mexico. One late night From our motel I walked alone to a nearby cafe to have a cup of coffee. On my way back to my motel I was accosted by a car load of kids. Out of the blue I heard someone call out my name. It was Jerry, who was concerned about my safety & went out looking for me at that every moment I was being accosted. Jerry shoo away the carload of kids & escorted me home. I believe the good lord told Jerry to go look for me. I believed I was saved by Jerry.
