Geraldine Elizabeth Richmond Thompson, 86, of Caldwell Street, Athens, died peacefully Tuesday evening, January 26, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Virginia. Born April 30, 1923 at Sandstone, she was the daughter of the late William Mose Richmond and Mary Clarice Taylor Richmond. Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of Sandstone High School, attended and supported the Princeton Church of God for over thirty years. She loved her family, enjoyed cooking, gardening and going to Sunday school. Mrs. Thompson, in her younger years, worked in the postal service in Meadow Creek and was a cook with the Meadow Creek School System. She along with her husband owned and operated several independent grocery stores in Raleigh County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lakie Joe Thompson in 1994, twin sons; Joe & Jim Thompson, and two brothers; William Richmond & Charles Thomas Richmond. Survivors Four children Shelby Jean Thompson Mary Jo Mays & husband Butch Deborah Annette Mathena all of Athens Michael Dean Thompson & wife Linda of Princeton Five grandchildren Samuel Lee. Mathena, Heather Elizabeth Mathena Pollard, Joe Phillip (J.P.) Mays, Mark Alan Mays & Stephen Michael Mays 3 Step grandsons, Harold Kenneth Stone, Dwight Wayne Stone & Mikel William Stone 11 Great Grandchildren 3 Step Great Grandchildren And several nieces and nephews Siblings, Deloris Thompson & husband Harry Carol Kelley all of Meadow Creek Margie Moon & husband Tom of Richmond VA Bobby Richmond & wife Joann of New Castle Del. Melvin Richmond & wife Shelva of Lockbridge Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 30, 2010 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory & Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastors Fred Farley & J.P. Mays officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memory Gardens in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Sam Mathena, J. P., Mark & Stephen Mays, Harold Stone and Donald Pollard.
