GERALD NICHOLS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 22 to Mar. 26, 2017.
NICHOLS Gerald Lee Nichols, 81, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, March 17, 2017. He was a remarkable man who touched many lives with his kindness, humor and generosity. He was a true leader in the railroad industry that he helped define and within his own extended family that he helped guide. His presence will be sorely missed by all who knew him and his name forever revered by all who loved him. Gerry was born in Louisville, Kentucky on May 22, 1935, the son of Frank and Dorothy Nichols. Raised in Louisville, he graduated from Valley High School (Class of 1953) before arriving on the hallowed grounds of the University of Kentucky. In addition to receiving his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1958, he was a member and president of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He would go on to receive a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Louisville in 1968. He also completed additional studies at Northwestern, McGill University and the Wharton School of Business. In 1958, he was inducted into the United States Army where he would serve his country with the Army Corps of Engineers for the next two years. He was honorably discharged in August 1960. He would continue to serve an additional six years in the military reserve, receiving a Military Commendation for his active service during the Berlin Crisis of 1962. In 1960, his storied railroad career began when he joined the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Starting out as a junior engineer, he steadily began his rise through the ranks at the L&N. In the early 1970s, he managed the construction of Osborn Yard in Louisville, the first fully computerized train yard. Soon after, he branched out of the engineering department with his appointment as Division Superintendent of the Louisville Division. In 1979, he moved to Jacksonville after the L&N Railroad and Seaboard Coast Line merger to oversee the transition and was on the team in 1980 that created CSX Corporation, headquartered in Richmond, VA. In 1980, he was elected Vice President and Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Board and President of CSX Corporation. In 1984, he was elected Senior Vice President and in 1995, named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CSX Transportation. He would end his distinguished career as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of CSX Corporation in December 1998. In addition, Gerry was a member of the Dean's advisory board of the University of Kentucky College of Engineering and was inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Distinction in April 1996. He also was a member of the advisory board of the University of Louisville College of Business. In 2002, he received the University of Louisville College of Business Alumni Fellows Award. Gerry was a mentor to many who came into his life and generous to countless charities, institutions and individuals with his time and resources. He loved his country, his UK Wildcats, his Jackie, his family, and his beloved dog, Missy Mae. The Chief lived life on his own terms with respect and compassion for others, an iron will to get things done and a mischievous grin on his face that reflected his love of good conversations and a good laugh. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Wilson Nichols, with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on March 29; son, Mark Andrew Nichols (Danielle); daughter, Kathryn Nichols Gunter; grandchildren, Kendall Gunter, Taylor Gunter and Harrison Nichols; brother, Frank Nichols (Tress); nephews, Casey Nichols and Mitchell Nichols (Drayton); numerous other nieces and nephews, family members and lifelong friends. Gerry was predeceased by his sister, Betty Nichols O'Bryant. Visitation will be Sunday, March 26 from 5-7pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel. Memorial Service will be Monday, March 27 at 11am at Riverside Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. A second service will be held in Lexington, KY on Monday, April 3 at 10:30am at First Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at The Lexington Cemetery. My heart goes out to Jackie and the Nichols family. From my earliest days with the railroad Gerry was a positive influence for me, not only with the railroad but in life. He always treated everyone equally, with dignity and respect.

Evelyn and I have many great memories of times shared with Jackie and Gerry. I count Gerry as one of my true friends in life and will miss him. My memories of him will live on.

During my career with the L&N and Seaboard, it was my great fortune to know Gerry. During his leadership, I often reported to him concerning my duties in connection as Manager-Office Equipment. He was always fair and pleasant. He was truly a "railroader."

How do you say goodbye to a man who has touched so many lives? It is so hard to summarize and put into words what this man meant to me. He was a gentle giant, a leader who led by example, a compassionate and humble man, philosophical at times but thoughtful always, generous with his time, and all the while, quietly loving from within.
God speed Gerry for this world is a little less today without you but heaven's stars are so much brighter by your presence.
With love and honor to a great man

I can't begin to describe the impact Mr. Nichols made in my career and my life.

He launched the best year of my life by sending me to Wales to work for British Steel, and he placed me in Lexington when I returned where Kentucky became a part of me.

He was kind, generous, fun-loving and genuine. His impact will live on through all those he touched.

We have been neighbors with "Mr. Gerry" and Jackie ("Mrs. Gerry", as our kids sometimes called her) for almost 16 years in the Ardsley Neighborhood. Our children grew up visiting with him and playing in the playhouse that his own kids and grandkids might have outgrown. Their house was always a favorite at Halloween for the whole neighborhood. I can't believe I won't be seeing him going for a "walk" in the golf cart with his dog (forgive me for forgetting her name) any more. He will be missed. Prayers for his family.

Very sad to hear of Gerry passing. He was a straight shooter, a gentleman, and a professional. He was a friend to me and helped me more than once. Never forget him, or what He stood for.

Jackie, Frank and all the Nichols Family. Wallie and I want to extend our heartfelt sympathy on the passing of a Great Man; Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and one Hell of a great Railroader!. From his athletic days at VHS to leading the L&N, then Seaboard, then into merger with the Chessie, thus creating the best Railroad on the East Coast, Chief was the leader we all could trust and rely on for guidance thru some tough but good consolidations. Always a Railroader even as he advanced up the corporate ladder, I recall working in the Control Center in Louisville and we would get a call about rusty wheels in the Oak street yard. He drove past on the way to his office and would call in to report the tankers needed exercising'. We nicknamed him The Oak Street Yardmaster.
After merging with Chessie, he believed a good way to get acquainted' would be to organize softball teams in each department and play each other in our own league. It was a good icebreaker as it gave us an opportunity to meet workers from other departments, swap problems and ideas, and made our united railroad operate more smoothly. On several occasions he helped me personally resolve some issues throughout my career for which I am forever grateful. All those knowing Chief will greatly miss him here on earth; but knowing he now has the best seat in the house to watch his beloved Cats' strive for another NCAA championship, it hopefully eases some of our sorrow. May our loving God wrap His loving arms around You and All the Nichols family and give all the comfort and solace needed. Jack (Blackjack' as he named me) and Wallie Vierling.

I can not even begin to describe how much this man taught me and what he meant to me. I will always remember his generosity, kind spirit, funny stories and wise words for me to ponder. The world and all who knew him are better off because he was here for 81 very short years. I will miss you and the twinkle in your eye Gerry Nichols!
Our love and prayers are with Jackie, Kathy, Andy and the Nichols family.

JACKIE AND FAMILY,

YOUR LOSS IS MADE EVEN MORE OVERWHELMING BY ALL OF US WHO HELD "CHIEF" IN SUCH ESTEEM. HE WAS SO EQUITABLE WITH HIS ATTENTION TO THE BIG FOLKS OR THE LITTLE FOLKS
AND WAS JUST AS GENEROUS. HE WAS MY HERO FOR HOW HE
ENDURED WITH HIS COMPLEX MEDICAL ISSUES OF LATE.
GOD BLESS YOU THROUGH THIS, I LOVE ALL OF YOU.

Our prayers and love to Gerry's family. I was a recipient of GLN's guidance at the L&N railroad years ago. I continue to call on his kindness, humor, and generosity as a example to live with my family, friends, and employs. Hope to work with you again on a project on the other side.

Gerry was the epitome of a fine Southern gentleman. His intelligent kindness was evidenced not only by his business success, but much more by his fine family and his love, Jackie. In truth, he was at his charming best in making (as he loved to tell it) his initial good impression on Jo Wilson.

Sharon and I held Gerry with the highest respect and esteem. His success in his career and his success in life were due to his concern for others. He had a big heart! We offer Jackie and the family our love and support as they cope with their great loss.

Gerry was a wonderful person we were blessed to know. We enjoyed seeing him drive his golf cart around the neighborhood. At our annual picnics he was always smiling and happy to have his picture taken. I have a photo of him with a group of little boys surrounding him on the golf cart.
He will be greatly missed.

My sincere sympathy to Gerry's family in this time of loss and sorrow. In my early railroading days he was my immediate supervisor. Working with Gerry certainly was a valuable experience for me. He was always a strong leader, well-liked and progressive. I watched proudly as he steadily climbed the corporate ladder and became a top executive. A life well-lived!
