To Gerry's family:
We were so looking forward to the Friday concert...Chuck, the Buffalo Philarmonic and especially Gerry playing "everything" as Chuck often introduced him...in our minds it will be the best concert we never heard...words can not express...

Gerry was a favorite at what used to be called the Cornerstone in Metuchen, NJ. Our local jazz community will miss him dearly.
He autographed my CD, "To a true fan." Indeed I was and I will miss his music and his presence.
Condolences to his family.

May you find comfort in your time of loss in the simplest gifts life gives us; a memory, a picture, a dream, or song and may you find your strength to move on only when you're ready. In remembrance of your loved one I sit and listen to Chase The Clouds Away. Now, if I could only take your tears and chase them away I wouldn't hesistate.

Dear Gurly, Adam and Elisabeth,
While I did not know your husband/dad personally, I saw him perform twice last year with Chuck Mangione. What a talent he is.
I know you will miss him the most but many jazz aficionados, like me, will be grieving with you. I am keeping the entire Niewood family in my daily prayers as you recover from the loss of Gerry. The heavenly concert hall will be hearing his superb music soon.

I extend my sincere sympathies to Gerry's family and to his friends as well, particularly to Chuck Mangione. As a lifelong resident of Rochester, Gerry and Chuck's hometown, I have many fond memories of their music and concerts, particularly "Friends and Love," "Hill Where the Lord Hides" and "Freddie's Walkin.'"

My prayers and sympathy go out to all of Gerry's family and friends.
As a teenage woodwind student learning to double, Gerry was one of my biggest influences. I wore out my copy of "Land of Make Believe" playing my flute along with his, and marveling at his full and expressive tenor sound. With his studio work many people have enjoyed his talent, without even knowing who it was.
I met Adam while waiting for office hours with Mike Scott at Berklee. I was a year or two ahead of him at the time. although we really didn't know each other well, from that time on, we would always acknowledge each other when ever our paths crossed.
Almost forgot this one, one of my biggest thrills as a teenager was the time I was able to get in the green room at Philharmonic Hall after a Mangione concert and spoke to Gerry for about fifteen minutes.

I first heard Gerry's work with Chuck Mangione back in the 70's. He was an incredible musician who brought both joy and tears with his melodic playing. My thoughts and prayers are with Gerry's family, his friends, and the many fans of his who will mourn his loss until the day of our own. Rest easy with the angels Gerry. Thank you for the great music you have left us. You will live forever through your music.

Gerry performed with Chuck Mangione at Williamsville South HS on January 27, 1973, together with our orchestra and band. I will never forget the experience of playing with them. Thank you, Gerry, for the incredible gifts you have given for so many years. My deepest condolences to your family and friends.

An old acquaintance, A musical mentor, a true musical genius who was one of the new musical innovators who brought the soprano sax in to a re-birth at a time when jazz fans were searching for a new direction among the metallic sounds of the early seventies. One of the most under-rated soloists who was so melodic in his playing that his improvisations became new melodies of their own. He searched for and found new notes, not in the typical “runs” but explored the fringe of Melodic, Harmonic, Mixolydian and Phrygian modes always coming back to the basic structure of a composition. Gerry was generous in sharing his knowledge and technique to those of us where were young and thirsty for a new and peaceful sound while displaying a uniquely fresh and different palette of tonal colors. I could never get enough of Gerry. Every improvisation was a fresh, new approach, never laying down the same lines. He was an extension of Trane, Shorter, Bechet, and even Herbie Mann. He was a quiet and peaceful soul who didn’t want the limelight but was always there in the section as a multi-reed marvel who mastered all of the woodwinds including the haunting alto flute. Your absence leaves a void that cannot be filled in this lifetime.

As a long time Clarence resident, my deepest sympathy goes out to you. His wonderful musical ability has provided me with years of pleasure and enjoyment from various Chuck Mangione recordings. May it bring you comfort in knowing that he is at peace, and will be forever remembered as the one who musically brought sunshine into homes by "Chasing the Clouds Away." God Bless.
