Shocked and saddened does not come close to describing how I felt when I heard of Gil's death. I will remember the outrageous things he used to say to me that would start me laughing and giggling. I will miss him but thoughts of him will always make me smile in remembrance. May he rest in peace. Deepest sympathies to his family.

Keep Gil close in your hearts and he will remain there always.
The world was a better place with him, and now look up and he is the brightest star always watching over you all.
Stay strong.....

It's difficult to put greatness into words.
Gil was a great man.
I loved him for his enthusiasm and his tenacious encouragement.
He could make you believe you could do anything; and you usually could.
With Gil around, success seemed to inevitably follow.
He was the greatest coach, boss, mentor, fan and confidante.
I will miss him greatly; I already do.
I take solace in knowing that his lessons, joy and his class will live on in the countless lives he touched; including mine.
Georgia, Chris, Ron & Kristine - I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you always.

Gil,
Not only were you a great softball coach, you were a great life coach.
You always made people feel like they could accomplish anything and as on the ball diamond, you would do whatever you could to help them succeed.
I thank you for the lessons you taught me and I will miss your stories and the laughter they brought.
Georgia, Chris, Ron and the rest of the Read Family,
Our deepest sympathies and we hope the memories will ease some of your sorrows.

Gil was a great employer and a great friend. I "forced " him to give a job back in the eighties and it was the some of the best years of my life. Whenever you had a question or concern he would take the time resolve it. He will be missed terribly. My deepest condolences to his wife, Georgia, his sons and all of his family. God Bless Terry Sawchuk and family.

To the Read family:
My memories of Gil go back 30 years when I first started as a legal assistant. Gil’s kindness, patience and pleasant demeanor was always so touching and sincere. If you were having a bad day or a busy day, and you were lucky enough to have an opportunity to speak with Gil, somehow your day seemed brighter and better. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this difficult time. I can only imagine the sorrow you must be feeling. It gives me comfort to think that Gil will be an angel watching over us, and once again he will make us feel better and things will look brighter.
Sincerely,
Don Fraser

Gil was a class act who put me under his wings, was kind to me, taught me the ropes about being a professional as a sometimes hapless 17-21 year old working for Reads and suffered my indiscretions with high class (along with his brother Rob!). And what humour from him- damn! Still laugh at his stories. I am saddened to see him go so soon but his influence and the tremendous positive impact he's had on other people (like me) should give the Read family a full and happy heart.
His life mattered and it was lived well. To the Read family and his kids, my condolences.
Take comfort in his good life.

Chris, I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him,he must have been a wonderful man to have a terrific man as you Chris, as his son. Know I have been thinking of you and my deepest sympathy for you and your family.
A life well lived is a precious gift of hope and strength and grace
From someone who has made our world a brighter, better place
It is filled with moments sweet and sad, with smiles and sometimes tears
With friendships formed and good times shared and laughter through the years.
A LIFE WELL LIVED is a legacy of joy and pride and pleasure,
a loving, lasting memory our grateful hearts will treasure.
Take care.

I knew Gil for many years as a very respected fastball coach who was a great role model for his players. I enjoyed his friendship and good nature and our Kanata/Stittsville rivalry was fun on the playing field but my respect for him extended much farther than "between the lines". May you endure these days of loss and arrive at a place of peace and understanding.
There will come a time when your tears of sorrow will softly flow into tears of remembrance and your heart will begin to heal; grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy and you will hear the whisper of hope.
There will come a time when you will welcome the tears of remembrance as a sunshower of the soul, a turning of the tide, a promise of peace.
There will come a day when you will go on believing and treasure the tears of remembering.
Keeping you close in my thoughts in this difficult time. My deepest sympathy goes to you and your family.

Gil has been a friend since we were kids----sound of reason and dependable is Gil------we played sports together as kids and played on one special high school team"a magical team" as expressed by our old coach Moe. This team cemented many long term friendships. Gil and Steve were the 2 humble consistent voices of reason during those years and it makes sense that they became life long friends. While in University Gill invited me to assist him coach a junior football team. This experience brought me into the pleasures of coaching. Gil was a good athlete but was an even greater coach as his record proves. We both continued coaching in different sports over the years and periodically our paths would cross with a follow up lunch. At one of these lunches I expressed my reservation about changing from the public to the private sector, to which he offered me sage advice and assistace in setting up my business. Over our business careers we had many lunches and always romanced the past and gloated about our children. At one of these lunches we got together with Moe the football coach. It was a pleasure to sit in their presence as they reflected on that one magical football team " you were tough" proclaimed Moe to Gil.At my insistance Gil was prompted to tell Moe about his coaching career , especially the Olympic team which he coached. At that moment I witnessed one of those rare moments when two humble men silently smiled and recognised their respective achievments. Gil, Rob and I have periodically over the years exchanged business experiences and most recently at the end of a meeting, it was punctuated with the same refrain from Gil" we'll get together for lunch soon". Gil brought me into coaching and into private business which both have given me so much pleasure. THANK YOU OLD FRIEND
this morning as I rode my bike to work, which route takes me past our old high school, I stopped at that old football field, shed a tear and reflected on fond memories------we will have lunch again

Dear The Read Family
I am truly sorry for your tragic loss of your son, husband, father and brother. I am grateful to have known Gil for this short time. He had such zest for life.. he truly loved his family, friends and community..he gave so much of himself to everyone. Life is cruel when our precious are taken so young. My heart aches for you and my thoughts are with you as you grieve. Just know what a legacy Gil left behind and how much he will truly be missed. We can only hope that we all can leave such teachings and love on the earth as he has. Take care of yourselves, Gil would want this.

I only found out yesterday about Gil's passing. We go back for what, 30 years? Gil was such a gentleman during all the years I knew him and dealt with him at the "old Registry office". Those days will always stand in time. They will be memories in our hearts, of his career, of his life and in the memories of those of us who were foruntate to know Gil and share our life stories.
I lost my husband in May this year,when he died from an accidental death and head injuries like Gil. Dear Gil;
O how we miss you already – we will so miss sitting across from you and Georgia each Friday night at the restaurant and hearing your childlike “No Way” interspersed into the conversation. The quality you have of viewing the world through the eyes of a child, as though you were seeing and hearing everything for the first time, was so very endearing.
You were always the first person to offer a helping hand to everyone and anyone – Terry and I are most grateful for that, especially during the past couple of years, you have been such a constant source of strength and support to our whole family.
We wish you God speed and peace where-ever you may be.
Georgia, Ron, Chris and Kristine – Gil was a wonderful human being we are all so much better people for having known him – he is one of the most gentle and genuine people I have ever met and in his case the saying is so very true “only the good do die young”. Our hearts are broken and we are crying with you. Love, Terry, Kathy, Kelly, Colleen and Courtney
