It is with great sadness to learn of Gina Chen´s passing. I interacted with Gina while I was Chair of Hospital Dentistry at Stony Brook and the covering dental anesthesia attending while she provided anesthesia services for periodontal surgery patients.
We talked about her long journey to achieve her career goals as a dentist anesthesiologist, while setting the bar to perform at the highest level. I recall how she was able to calm even the most anxious patients before starting the anesthesia portion of the procedure. A smile, sparking a conversation, a reassuring touch on the shoulder. She was a wonderful individual, and a caring healthcare provider. She is dearly missed! Our thoughts are with her family!

Dear Dr.Chu and Daniel, I can't explain the shock and sorrow that I felt when I heard about Gina's passing. I often think about the wonderful time that she stayed with us in California. Even though it was short duration, it felt like having a family member as we grew closer and closer by the day. she will always been our memories. Sincere condolences from my entire family, may she Rest In Peace.

Gina, being a Stony Brook anesthesia resident, makes her family. However, we were never at Stony Brook together. I remember meeting her at a conference during her 3rd year of anesthesia training. She introduced herself as we happened to be sitting together. When I introduced myself she smiled and excitedly said, "You´re Jon Wong - like they still talk about you at Stony Brook." I laughed and explained the stories are probably just that, larger than real life stories. We soon realized we had a lot in common, in particular our love of cats. We joked that our cats were the smartest, with more years of study in dentistry and anesthesia than most humans.
I was at one of these conferences when I learned you were no longer with us. It stopped me in my tracks, and I had no words, just sorrow. Our ASDA president was with me and asked what happened. It was as if the world had stopped for a minute. We knew we had lost "a great one."
Gina, you will be missed. Know that you are loved by your friends, family (including your Stony Brook fam), and last but not least, cats.
My deepest sympathies to Dan, who I unfortunately never met, and all your family.

I remember Gina and her big, gorgeous smile. She was a joy to work with in PACU. She was open and willing to listen to nursing concerns and if she didn't know something she would find out. I was sorry to see her go when she graduated, but happy that she and Dan had found each other, as they were two of my favorite residents. She is missed.
