Glen Goodman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 2, 2022.

It is with broken hearts that the family announces that Mr. Glen Alexander Goodman, a lifelong resident of Beardmore Ontario passed away peacefully on Monday March 28, 2022. Born on August 12, 1942 in Port Arthur Ontario, Glen was the youngest child of Herb & Jeanette Goodman and raised in the Lake Nipigon commercial fishing village of MacDiarmid Ontario where he maintained many friendships throughout his lifetime. As a young boy he worked alongside his father as a fishing guide and commercial fisherman all the while developing an intricate knowledge of the regions land & water systems and a profound respect for the environment. Throughout his life Glen commercial fished on Lake Nipigon never relinquishing the relationship he had with his brothers or the family's occupation which he treasured so dearly.

His outdoor skills came into prominence under the mentorship of Frederick Netemegesic when Glen started trapping in the Barbara Lake area when he was 13 years old. Dad was most comfortable in the outdoors and annually harvested one of North-Western Ontario's most productive traplines for almost 60 years. In the early years of his marriage Glen was employed as the Catholic School high school bus driver and also prospected the Timmins gold fields, a hobby that preoccupied him until late in life. Glen was also one of Leitch Gold Mines last surviving employees, working underground at the time when one of the world's richest gold vein discoveries had been made. In his mid 20's Dad started his lengthy career with Domtar Forest Products at a time when horse teams were being phased from operations and replaced by modern equipment. After completing a mechanical apprenticeship & obtaining his Provincial Vehicle Mechanic license, he transferred into the logging division driving pulp trucks, became one of the regions top chainsaw harvesters then retired from the corporation as the owner of Goodman Delimbing. Never one to be idle, Glen returned to school shortly after his early retirement and graduated at the top of his class from Confederation College as a Provincially licensed Gas Fitter. Dad then owned and operated Goodman Heating for the next 15 years where he established many friendships in the HVAC industry throughout the region.

In retirement, Glen took great pleasure in spending the winter seasons residing in climates that allowed him to cast for fish from a local pier or beach. He was always in the company of his loving wife and their close friends Art & Laurie while in Florida or with all of his in-laws in Arizona. Renown as one of Lake Nipigon's great speckled trout fisherman, he shared his lifelong passion with all of his children and grandchildren. Dad was also extremely close with his neighbour Dr. John Benz with both of them sharing an enthusiastic appreciation for landing trophy square tails on their regular fishing excursions. Dad was most proud of our mom who coordinated all of their social activities at the family cottage, built with the skill and support of his brothers-in-law who he thought of as a fraternity of brothers throughout his lifetime. A husband with an enormous heart shared with his wife Ginette, they recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in November 2021. Glen was a lifelong member of the Beardmore Curling Club, the Beardmore Volunteer Fire Department retiring as Fire Chief, Beardmore Royal Canadian Legion Branch #148, coached his son's in the Beardmore Recreation Committee Baseball League, the Ontario Fur Managers Federation and consulted for many Provincial committee's on Lake Nipigon's fishery and forestry management.

When Dad left us for the spirit world he was secure in the knowledge that his connection to his family, friends and Lake Nipigon was firmly in the hands of those he loved most. A member of the Bear Clan originating from the Fisher River Cree Nation territories, he was proud of his Indigenous heritage & the friendships he had with all of the Lake Nipigon First Nations' elders.

Predeceased by his daughter Andrea; parents Herbert & Jeanette, sisters Winto, Lovey, Norah, Beatty and Dorothy, brothers Jack and Herb; parents-in-law Heliodore & Majella & brothers-in-law Robert, Jack and Cliff; Ben, Francis and Charly.

Glen is survived by his wife Ginette, sons Glen (Lisa), Cam (Joanne) and Richard, grandchildren Joshua and Jessica; Samantha and Brendan; Grayson and Abigail; Misty, great grandchildren Emma and Everett; sister Shirley and brother Frank (Dorothy); sisters-in-law Joyce, Donna, Martine (Eric), Christine (Clyde), Carol, Marilyn and Lorraine; brothers-in-law Louis, Andre (Raymonde), Camille (Loraine), Pierre (Jocelyne), John, Carl, Michael (Debbie), Nelson (Darlene) and numerous nieces & nephews.

Glen's family extend our gratitude to all employees of the TBRHSC Cancer Care Centre; Dr. Vergidis, Dr. Chan, Dr. Garon, NP Brenda Goodman and all the medical staff that have cared for our dad on this journey. The 20 year timeline spent with his family and friends since he was first diagnosed has been most precious for us all.

A celebration of Glen's life will be held at Our Lady of Loretto Church, 290 Grenville Avenue in Thunder Bay Ontario beginning at 11:00 AM on Monday April 4th, 2022.

In lieu of floral arrangements, a donation can be made in Glen's memory to the St. Joseph's Care Group Hospice or Our Lady of Loretto Church.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Glen´s passing. He was a kind and knowledgeable man who never hesitated to share his wisdom and friendship. We first met Glen when he was a Contractor for Union Gas and Gaston was a new
employee. Glen was always willing to assist and share his wealth of knowledge. Through the years Glen and Gaston became great friends and even though they didn´t see each other often, their friendship was very apparent every time they did.
Rest In Peace Glen. You will be greatly missed.
