Glenn Stehr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2022.
Glenn Eldon Stehr passed away on November 12, 2022 in Naperville Illinois having celebrated his life in the company of many members of his family and friends during nearly 8 weeks of hospice care. He courageously battled several health challenges over the past few years and passed on feeling the deep love of his family and many dear friends.

Glenn was born in Ottawa Illinois on March 1, 1929 to Reverend Irvin Stehr and Allie (Schneider) Stehr. Glenn spent his grade school years in Aurora Illinois, and his high school years in Metamora Illinois, graduating from Metamora High School in 1946. He graduated from North Central College in Naperville in 1950, and received his MS in Biology from the University of Illinois in Champaign in 1952. Glenn was a proud Army veteran and served in the Japan during the Korean War from January 1953-April 1954.

On December 26, 1954 he married Carol Ruth Zornig, and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage until her passing in December 2010. Glenn taught at Peotone High School from 1954-1955, at Bloom Township High School from 1955-1959, and was part of the original faculty staff at Prairie State College, teaching microbiology, anatomy, and physiology to about 2000 nursing students and 1000 dental hygiene students from 1959 until his retirement in 1984. Glenn and Carol spent nearly their entire married life (55 years) in the same house on Clyde Rd. in Homewood where they raised their three children. In 2017 Glenn relocated to Villa St. Benedict in Lisle IL where he enjoyed making many new friends and being closer to family. Glenn often pointed out that he was fortunate enough to have enjoyed more years in retirement than he spent working!

Glenn had a special talent for connecting with people, always greeting them with a smile and finding something to chat about with almost everyone he met. He had an amazing memory, recalling everything from the minute details of family vacations, to where his friends and acquaintances grew up, went to college, and what sports they played. In his later years, he spread joy by handing out silver dollars and lucky artificial rabbit foot keychains to those with whom he had a special connection or were in need of some good luck. He will be missed dearly.

Glenn is survived by his two brothers, Don (Joan) Stehr of Albuquerque, NM and Truman Stehr of Red Wing, MN, along with his three children, Steve (Jamie Ryder), Nancy Hermann (Paul Mascitti), and Sue (John) Lies, and his grandchildren Alex Stehr, Caroline Stehr, AJ (Jennie Hou) Hermann, Allie Hermann, Maggie (Carlos Hernandez) Lies, Jake Lies, and Zack Lies, and many nieces and nephews.

At Glenn's request, services will be for family only due to concerns with the spread of Covid 19. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northwestern Memorial Foundation, PO Box 734985, Chicago, Illinois 60673-4985. Please make checks payable to "Northwestern Memorial Foundation" and include "Glenn Stehr" in the memo line. Donations can also be made online at foundation.nm.org or over the phone at (833) 443-8663. Your gift will support the Warrenville Cancer Center.

I had the privilege of knowing Glenn as a patient (one of our favorites!)
He was such a sweet soul who never forget to bring treats for all of our pets, most of which he could remember by name!! We all got very attached to him. Although we are sad to see him pass, it brings me a smile to think of him in heaven giving treats to all the dogs and cats:)
People like Glenn make our job less a job and more of an honor. I hope your family takes joy in knowing that he truly touched our hearts and will definitely not be forgotten. Rest In Peace Glenn.

We moved to Clyde road about 17 yrs ago. Glenn and Carol were the first to greet us. He has been part of our house warming, Shay´s graduation, and wedding to name a few. He sent encouraging letters to Shay while at WASHU while leaving letters in my mailbox making sure I was not working too many hours. I think everyone he has met received a silver dollar:) Mine is with me every day. You may have lost a Dad, grandpa.... I lost a truly kind caring wise funny storyteller of a friend. Glenn you will be missed but I am sure you are smiling as you are with Carol. Will always remember you fondly and try to model your examples. Family may God give you peace during this difficult time.
