CAMPBELL
Glenorchy J., died peacefully in his sleep on the 4th of July, 2014 at 101 years of age in Ridgewood, NJ. A longtime resident of Ridgewood, "Glen" was born in New York City on May 1, 1913, to Glenorchy and Mary Ann (O'Neill) Campbell, immigrants from Edinburgh, Scotland and County Clare, Ireland respectively. Raised in Harlem and Highbridge in The Bronx, Glen went to work after graduation from Resurrection Grammar School in Harlem. By 1929, he had already worked at the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium selling newspapers, peanuts, and more. He worked constantly to help his mother support the family of seven. His jobs include considerable time as messenger/runner on Wall Street. At age 10, Glen worked opening day of Yankee Stadium in April of 1923. Dad and his brother, Jack, worked in Mo and Willy Unger's grocery store on University Avenue in the Highbridge section of The Bronx, and ran the store for them on the Sabbath and the high holy days. In his twenties, Glen returned to school and graduated in 1938 from DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx.
In October of 1940, Glen enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before World War II. After war broke out in the Pacific, as a member of Edson's Raiders, the First Marine Raider Batallion, he fought in battles in Tulagi, Tasimboko, Guadalcanal, and Matianikau in the Solomon Islands. He was MIA for a time and wounded in action on October 9, 1942. Glen returned to the US for treatment and rehabilitation in the Seattle, San Francisco, and Bethesda Naval Hospitals. He was awarded the Purple Heart in 1944. Honorably discharged as a Corporal in Washington, D.C., in October of 1945, he lived and worked there until the fall of 1948, when he returned to NYC.
In addition to his work at Yankee Stadium, Glen also worked at Rogers Peet & Coi., The US Railway Mail, the Ridgewood Post Office, Armored Courier, and Purolator.
Throughout his long life, Glen remained an avid reader, Yankee fan, and had no shortage of political opinions. He never missed voting in an election (school board, primary, general, presidential etc.).

A Celtic Blessing
Deep peace of the running wave to you,
Deep peace of the flowing air to you,
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you,
Deep peace of the shining stars to you,
Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
May the road rise to meet you;
May the wind be always at your back;
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
May the rains fall softly upon your fields.
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
