It's really a shock to know our dear sister Gloria has passed away. Indeed as the Bible tells us that we do not know what will happen tomorrow, and we are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. But we are grateful that during this short life, we could meet sister Gloria and brother Chung-Wen. They were our host family when we first came to US as students. Because of their love and hospitality, we could settle down in a foreign country smoothly. Gloria was always smiling and positive. Her heart for the Lord encouraged every one surrounding her. Although we have not seen her for more than 20 years, her beautiful smile and encouraging words are still fresh and vivid in our hearts. We praise the Lord for her wonderful life and tremendous influences. What Bible concluded about King David, also applied to Gloria: "David (Gloria) had served God's purpose in his (her) own generation, he (she) fell asleep." (Acts. 13:36)

Brother Chung-Wen, Timothy, and Jennifer, "May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word." (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17) May He comfort you through this difficult time. His grace is definitely enough for you! You all are in our prayers.

We were shocked to learn of the sudden death of Ms. Gloria Chen. The news of Gloria's death came as a great sorrow to us. Words are inadequate to express our feelings. But we hope her family can find consolation in the fact that she lived a rich and full life. None of us will ever forget her.

We were so saddened to hear of Gloria's passing. We met Gloria and her family in Dr. Yuan's Friday night Bible study when we studied at Old Dominion University 30 years ago.

Gloria always impressed us with her devotion to God and her family. Our favorite memory of Gloria is her beautiful smile. She was such a shining light in many people's life. We'll all miss her but her legacy will live on through all the great work she did.

Our heartfelt condolences to Chung-wen and family during this time of sorrow. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

This past Wednesday (11/15/2017) morning, a student of Faith Bible Theological Seminary mentioned to me that he enjoyed the Chinese Christian Student Fellowship activities held at SUNY-New Paltz during the years while Gloria and Chun-wen Chen were leading and serving the student ministry more than 15 years ago.
Gloria's genuine warm and caring smile to others will be remembered by all people she had reached. Though she had departed from us to be with our Lord Jesus Christ, her sweet smiles and voices are forever in our mind.

Chu-wen, Timothy, and Jennifer: May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace during this difficult time.
Emmanuel,

I meet Gloria almost 30 years ago in Bible Study when I first arrived in ODU from China. She is such a wonderful person, loving the GOD and always willing to help other people. She is only three years older than me and should live and server the GOD for many more years. May GOD be with her.

I remember a time, when I was in a very dark place in my life. I was a patient at PBH and she and Chung-wen came to visit me. She gave me a book to help me learn Chinese. She said it was something to do while I was in there and it would help me keep my dreams of returning to China alive. She was such a giving person, and she never gave up on anyone. She was dedicated to her students. Even if I only sat in on one her travel Chinese classes, I consider myself one of her students. She also taught me a lot about life and about being a strong woman in the Lord. I will never forget her smile. She was the very essence of Christ.
My prayers are with all of those who loved her,

Thank you very much Gloria and John Wayne for your kind hospitality when I was a poor college student at ODU. Your encouragement to press on with Chinese language study helped set a good foundation for my diplomatic career at the Commerce Department over these past two decades. I have put my Chinese to good use with two assignments in Beijing totaling 8 years. I will always remember you and Dr. & Mrs. Yuan's Friday night Bible study with the fondest of memories! God Bless You. Val Huston

The amount of posts here, as well as their content, speaks to how loved Gloria was. To know her was to realize how special she truly was. I remember seeing her at the Johnny Appleseed festival a month after I met her, when she had just started at Tech. She looked to be with some students, and I'm sure she brought them with her to the festival. (She was so wonderful with our international students, helping them get acclimated to the university but also the larger community.) She saw me and ran up to me to give me a hug. I remember thinking then what an amazing person she was; she was the most genuinely kind person I've ever met. Gloria, you will be missed immensely. To Gloria's family: Thank you for sharing such a sweet soul with all of us. My thoughts are with you.

I worked with Gloria and saw her often as I walked past her office - she always had a sweet smile. Gloria's kind heart is an inspiration and I will carry that with me. I am glad to have had such a ray of sunshine touch my life.

Gloria Chen was our good friend and sister in Christ. During the time when she was in Poughkeepsie, she was always making her best to serve our LORD, the church, and the community.
She was always smiling and very gentle and nice in speaking with other people. She was always patient and caring about other people's needs. In reality, she showed GOD's love to all of us. I still remember that she tried to use her limited daily time to offer her possible help and care about any needs from church and people surrounding her. We are so blessed to have a friend like her.
Gloria was also an alumni of the university in which my wife had studied. They knew each other
quite a long time ago. Even though Gloria had to move to Fort Wayne with her family, we had never forgotten her and her family. She came back to see us about two years ago and we are thinking about visiting her and her family. Each time when I saw her two children, it reminded me of a great family education in this family. Gloria really set up a very good model for us to learn. We will always keep her in our memory.

Chinese Department Classmate Re-union in 2016

November 17, 2017

Dear Chung-Wen and family members of our beloved Gloria;

We are college classmates of Gloria. We shared a precious 4-year journey together in the Chinese Language and Literature Department of National Taiwan University. This journey started when we were 18 and ended when we turned 22. We were young and full of hope, eager to learn and not afraid to try.

Forty years passed by, while we are growing older we continue to stay close via emails, Line group conversations and in-person class re-unions. Gloria had always been one of the most energizing characters among us. Her smiles, her sincerity, her warm personality and thoughtfulness are a givenalways there, always have been and will always be, we thought.

What we did not know is that she kept a secret from us. One that we did not realize until too late. She had been ill. But she decided to keep all the burden to herself and acted as if nothing was hindering her ability to give boundlessly.

Now she has finally completed her well fought battle and returned to the Lord, with glory. We are left with great sorrow and disbelief. All we can say is everyone in our class shares the same heavy heart as you do and we also have endless love for Gloria as she has for us.

Gloria was a kind, intelligent, gentle person who had a good word for everyone. I had great respect for her. I got to know Gloria by working on several committees with her. I don't think she knew how many lives she touched. I will miss talking to Gloria about making Chinese food, like dim sum and chicken feet. I remember her comment that she never made chicken feet! My sincerest condolences to her family during this difficult time. All of you will be in my prayers.

The message I posted yesterday had many typos especially after Chinese characters were deleted. I must redo it because Gloria is an excellent writer and a wonderful teacher in both Chinese and English.

It came as a big shock that she went to heaven on 11/9/2017 through our classmate line group (1970). She called me 2-3 years ago and invited me to have classmate reunion at her house along with Grace and Dr. Lee, who will represent our class to attend her memorial service.

Gloria has been my role model for the past 50 years since we met at middle high school. By following her good example, I achieved a better academic success at middle high school compared to that of my elementary school. Her influence continued to my highest (Ph.D.) degree when I could really appreciate her role in my life. Although she helped me even more in recent years, I do not remember that I made her known how much my parents and siblings and I appreciate her good example. In addition, Gloria led me to the church and few years later to a retreat at Tainan Olive Mountain, rendering my decision to follow Jesus at our age of 16.

To her oldest sister and second older sister, please allow me to give you big hugs and say how much I treasure the time together with Gloria and everybody in your family. Especially I will never forget that you helped Gloria and I in our school entrance exams and I cannot thank you enough for your good deeds. During the middle school age of Gloria and me, you all rode bicycles from your house to the church through my house and my parents' factory of sweet potato every Sunday morning. I followed you all.

To her husband and her beloved son and daughter, you probably have heard from her about me and my classmate, I am very sorry for her departure and will hold you in my heart to pray for all of you.

To all common friends and classmates of Gloria and me, please excuse me for I hardly face you in her memorial service or anywhere in the world without deepest sorrow.

Gloria was the sweetest and kindest person I've ever met! I am really lucky that I had her as my very first English teacher when I arrived at Indiana Tech six years ago. She truely devoted herself to her students. I had the pleasure to work with her after I graduated and enjoyed every interaction with her professionally. She was not only a teacher to me, but more like a friend, a mother and a mentor. She gave me advices about career, marriage, and so much more. Her warm smile and hugs always give me comfort. She was truely a blesssing in my life and she will always be missed! I hope Lord will give Elder Chung wen and his family strength to go through this difficult time! My most sincere condolences!

I worked with Gloria at Indiana Tech last fall. The thing I remember the most about her was how happy she always was and how welcomed she made me feel. On more than one occasion she sat down with me to talk about a lesson I had put together and/or how to best measure student learning. She was an amazing professional and also a kind, generous soul. I will never forget how kind she was to me. Lots of love, Gloria.

It was a surprise for us to hear that Gloria has unexpectedly passed away. Her loss left us profound sadness and empty feeling. She was a devoted mother, a dutiful wife, and a good teacher, beloved by many people. She was a person with quick-wittedness and exerted her brilliant ability in many areas. She was also a person whose smile made everyone happy, and this character was a genuine gift she had truly received. We mourn over her death, and sincerely would like to express our deepest condolences to bereaved families.

Sister Gloria is the most willing person that I know of in helping others -- my family was one of them. Her radiant smiles are like Spring winds, so mild and truthful, that are unforgettable by whoever touched by her. Learning the news of her sudden passing is very hard for us, my family misses her a lot.

Though she had departed from us to be with our Lord, her sweet smiles and voices are forever in our mind. We thank God for being able to know her and to co-work with her in various capacities, for the past decades. May God establish her work and may He remember her family and comfort them because He is Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort!

What a loss. I was speechless when my husband told me. He worked with Gloria and the IEP program, and we had been at her house on several occasions. She was such a warm, genuine, kind-hearted person. She always greeted me with a smile and a hug, even though she did not know me very well. I cannot imagine the depth of grief that her family is experiencing. Such a vibrant woman who was so full of life and full of love for what she did and the people she served. And her dedication to her faith was amazing to witness. I will miss her loving warmth and smile. I'll always think of her when I look at the moon and hear her singing "I see the moon and the moon sees me."

I am very sad to hear this news. Gloria is an amazing lady. During the half a year I spent in Fort Wayne, she is really kind and gave me lots of help. When I was looking for a job and distressed, the church family are with me. She and elder Chung-Wen generously let me move into their basement when my apartment contract expires. The memory of living with Gloria and Elder Chung-Wen is very precious. Now she is with god in heaven. May she rest in peace.

Gloria and I worked together as editors for school magazine at Tainan 1st girl's high school from 1971-1973, we were good friends since then. We both joined school marching band, she played clarinet, I played trumpet. Even thought we were never classmates, because of those activities, we worked very close together. She is not only smart, but also works very hard, which well prepared her to be successful in all the field. She is always the leader wherever she is - a very humble, sweet, kind leader. I just reconnected with her in March, and invited her and Chung-wen to have vacation with us to Virginia in June, unfortunately, they cannot make it. Our last phone exchange was in June, ever since then, I tried all different way to be in touch with her, but, in vain. I am very regret that I did not do my best.
It is so hard for me to believe that she is gone forever, Gloria, hope you rest peacefully in God's hand, I will always remember you. My prayers to Chung-wen, her sister and her two kids,

Gloria was an amazing lady! She was the bright, happy face that I encountered on the way to and from the Snyder Academic Center. She always had a wave and a smile. I attended the Int'l Meet & Greet a few months ago. I loved her story about picking her American name - Gloria - and later finding out that all the "Gloria's" in the U.S. are old. I stopped in her office the next day and we chatted about it. I shared with her that I'm the youngest "Judy" there is as well. She was a super lady and she is and will be missed at Indiana Tech! My prayers are with her family during this sad time.

I met Gloria when I was teaching English courses at Indiana Tech and soon came to depend on her knowledge and insight when teaching ESL students. She always met me with a smile and listened intently to my concerns about students. Afterward, I always felt more confident in my ability to be an effective instructor due to her guidance and suggestions. I am very sad to hear of her passing, both for her family and friends, but also for the students who will no longer be able to benefit from her advice and her kindness.

It is with my deepest sorrow in hearing the sad news. Gloria is a long term member, and the Model Member, of Fort Wayne Chinese Families and Friends Association (FWCFFA). In the past a decade, I saw her smiling faces in parties of Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festivals. Most children in this community have their Chinese name tags from her beautiful handwritings. Her kindness and enthusiasm positively affects many people around her, include students from Taizhou with summer camp at Fort Wayne this year. I believe she lives in many people's hearts with her typical smiles.

Chen She was my first foreign language teacher, and taught Chinese at North Side High School. I wish I had our pictures together here with me in Atlanta, but they're all at home. She was the first woman in my high school experience to encourage me to chase my dreams to study language, to study linguistics, and to study abroad as a young student. As someone who identified as Taiwanese, she was always happy to not only teach me about Chinese language and cultural significance, but the only one at my school that I could talk to about my Japanese heritage. She taught me "Language is more than words, it's understanding". She encouraged us to see the world beyond our city and strive to learn about people different then ourselves. I carried this and will continue to carry these lessons and the discipline of learning foreign language with me for the rest of my life. She gave compassion, love, and encouragement to all of her students and was not afraid to check you if you were out of line. Her class was a sanctuary. If I had a bad day, practicing skits, doing Tai Chi, or quietly writing calligraphy always re-centered me before my day ended. The last time I saw her was at her goodbye party at her house after she decided it was time to leave North Side High and teach at IPFW. I croqueted her a rug that had the symbol because 'ai' means love in both Japanese & Chinese. It makes me sad that I couldn't figure out how to contact her after loosing her phone number. I definitely wanted her at my high school graduation and was just thinking last week how to write to her before I graduated college... I hope you rest easy Chen

Praise God for Gloria and her life lived to God's glory and service. She intensely loved all who entered her life and was tirelessly at work to help others. She was my first Chinese teacher, my Chinese mother away from home, my mentor, and my dear friend. I look forward to our reunion in heaven together with Jesus!

Gloria, l am glad you are with our Heavenly Father now. We really miss you. I hope we can see each other again in heaven together. You were one of the most inspiring teacher at our church. Your smile, kindness, lovingness, reminded everyone the love and joy of God. We really do miss you. I am glad now that you may no longer worry about everything and is happy up there. I still can't believe everything that had happened but your presence means a lot to us.

Dear Gloria,

You've raised two wonderful children, and we are lucky enough to have one of them, Jenn, become part of our family when she married Christopher. Even though we met only at special occasions through out these years, I've ALWAYS enjoyed your company and ALWAYS was touched by your warmth and your joyous spirit! We will miss you dearly, and we will make sure Christopher will always take good care of Jenn and Ollie (which I'm sure you know he needs no push on that...he LOVES them both to no ends!)
Rest in Peace Gloria.

Love
Anne, Alan and Alex

Although I only work with you for 9 months at Indiana Tech, I do feel as if I had been knowing you for my entire life, as you are such a kind-hearted, encouraging, and trustful friend as well as my co-worker. I am sure you will be alive in the depth of my heart until the everlasting future!!
