Ms. Maddocks and Old Lyme High are synonymous to me, intertwined in my memory, as it's impossible to think of one without the other. She was kind, elegant and always wonderful and helpful. What a presence she was in that office, as she was on the sidelines of the soccer games. Every pincipal who passed through that position was lucky to have her there. I'm sure her spirit will continue to grace the halls with kindness and wit. Love and support to all of her family and friends.

When I first looked up and saw that smile, I knew I was in the right place. For almost 61 years I got to enjoy that soft, warm smile and gracious manner. She was a beacon in darkness, a steady hand in uncertainty and a model of respect for all to follow. She brought love to life. I thank you Mom. You will always be with me.

Gloria was a very special friend. When I entered LOLHS in the seventies as a staff member, she was a constant support. I noticed then how she supported students and their concerns, and how she was an ever-present spectator at game after game, cheering on her beloved students. As time went on, we became connected more and more on a personal level, and it was after I had left LOLHS and after Gloria retired that we got to spend some quality time together. We had a group of friends, some retired, and we would meet monthly for dinner. It may have been Sal's in Westbrook in earlier years, but more recently the place was the Olive Garden...We would share our thoughts and a good salad and dinner and catch-up with one another. Chelsea, and later Stella and Henry, were dear to Gloria's heart as she filled us in on the details of their lives.
My visits with Gloria over the last four months of her life were equally enriching. Dinners now were out of the question, but Gloria was always up for some good conversation and always interested in my life as well as sharing her own struggles with her failing health. She was a classy lady at all times, even in these difficult weeks. Once she returned home she enjoyed a beautiful spot in a favorite room by a beautiful picture window. The birds feeding outside, the feeders so lovingly filled and maintained by Eric so Gloria could enjoy what would be her final days. Her faith was a source of comfort to her, and has been a source of comfort to me since her passing. Gloria always acknowledged even the simplest visit together with a fine card and her beautiful calligraphy. She mailed me a card a few days before she entered the hospital, telling me how much she prayed for everyone she knew. She reminded me that God loves us all. On those final words, I will go on, supported by the experience of her caring friendship and deep spirituality. Gloria will be deeply missed, but long remembered by those who knew and loved her.

OLHS was always a better place when Gloria graced the office. She was a delight to know from the very day she began work there. I am, indeed, saddened by the thought of her passing.

When I think of the 4 years I spent at Old Lyme High School the first person that comes to mind that made a difference in how I view the world is Gloria Maddocks. It was always a pleasure to go to the office. I am forever grateful that Gloria was able to attend our reunion last July as she did for all our reunions. It was such an honor to have known her. Reunions just will not be the same without Gloria's physical presence but I know she will be at all of them in our memories of her.

Mrs Maddocks was the heart and soul of Lyme-Old Lyme High School for so many years. For 42 years, we were fortunate and blessed to have this amazing lady at the helm of this school, our family. She graced us with her beautiful smile, her deep, calming voice, and a twinkle in her eye. The school never seemed the same after she retired. There was something missing. She was the heartbeat, the cheerleader, so dedicated to each and every student, faculty member, coach, and parent. We were blessed to have known her as she touched our lives. "A beautiful life that came to an end, she died as lived, everyone's friend. In our hearts, a memory will always be kept, of one we loved, and will never forget." With love, knowing you are looking down on us today, our guardian angel.

Mrs. Maddox was always so calm and no matter what the issue was that brought me to the Principal's Office at OLHS, she was the voice of reason and always had a kind word to say. She was such a comfort during high school years, knowing that she was there and she seemed to be there in that office at work EVERY day during my high school years. She was someone I looked up to and remember her as being a woman of warmth and class. Prayers and thoughts for the family and close friends who will miss her dearly.

I'm sure there's not enough room here to list all the wonderful things Gloria did and was to all of us. She will be greatly missed. . . . Thanks for keeping me off that tardy list all those times, and for being such a good influence for us all.

Gloria has been a part of my life in one way or another since her arrival at the Middle School/High School in the late '50s. A more gracious, warm, friendly, helpful, kind lady would be difficult to find. Better yet, when I moved back to Old Lyme and enrolled my children in school, she was still here! YAY! I told them both to go to her if either EVER needed anything; she would help them. I can't add to what everyone has said, except that I will miss her presence. She was/remains a role model for all of us.

Mrs. Maddocks was the brightest star at LOLHS. I will never forget how welcome she made my sisters and I feel when we moved to Old Lyme during high school, and how she cheered for us on the soccer field. She was one of the most generous and loving spirits that I have ever known. God bless you, Mrs. Maddocks.

I Bid You Ado
The clouds are hanging low in the sky
As a tear falls from the corner of my eye
The losses and sorrows that take up space in my heart
Leave me feeling heavy, I don’t know where to start
There is a dark cloud hanging over my head
I venture out into the world with a feeling of dread
I’d rather just hide make the world go away
I’m not feeling very strong as I move about today
The sadness touches me in a very deep place
As I think of your sweet and beautiful face
You have touched many lives with your kind, gentle words
Go; fly away on the wings of heavenly birds
Today they will lay you into the ground
You will be surrounded by the loved ones you have found
Each with their own precious story to tell
Of how they knew you and loved you so well
I bid you ado as you go on your way
Knowing I will see you again, another day
My world was made brighter by the love that you gave
You have no idea about the lives that you saved

Eric,
Your Mom will be remembered by many of us who had the
sincere pleasure of knowing her.
She was elegant, graceful and kind, always with an encouraging word(s) to help you make it through the day!
Her spirit will live on in the athletic fields at Old Lyme High School, I can still see (and hear) she and Tommy Bowers on the side lines cheering our team
to victory,
I will cherish those fond memories!
Your Mom was one of the absolute best Eric, how proud you must be to have had such an awesome Mom!
She will live forever in our hearts!
Peace and blessings to you Eric....
Fondly,
Jacklyn Swaney Carney
I'm sorry that I didn't get to share a kind word with you today at her service, God Bless.......

Mrs. Maddocks was such a wonderful woman. She always had a smile on her face and never missed a baseball game or sporting event in my four years. I still have the t-shirts she made for us and every student who attended Lyme-Old Lyme was a better person for knowing her.

Gloria was a special person who touched so many lives for so long --she would help everyone she met or knew (including a young inexperienced high school principal) without thinking twice about it--she loved Lyme- Old Lyme High School and everyone who worked, taught, coached, studied or played there--the feeling was mutual-- our heartache will linger and then be replaced by lasting great memories of Gloria-- I was fortunate to have visited her at home this past Christmas Eve Day to relive some of those terrific memories --she always sent Christmas cards and somehow remembered birthdays -- and this summer even sent money for our 5 grandkids to each buy a toy from her as they visited us in Vermont --what a caring, thoughtful, special person -- In the ethics of the tribe there is only one question to be asked and answered--"How many people were happier and better because you were born ?"-the answer would determine entrance to heaven---Gloria is surely in heaven with her favorite Pope John Paul and throngs are cheering her for her good works and the positive difference she made in so many people's lives--of all the titles I have had in my career one of the ones I am most proud of is that of "Gloria's friend"- thanks for everything our special Gloria -- you will be missed-- and one more thing please put a good word in for us all -- peace

Eric, we're so sorry your Mom lost her battle. Many in our class of 1970 were fortunate and honored that she came to our reunion in September for a LITTLE while, posed for pictures with groups of us, sat and talked while we flocked around her. Her wonderful, gentle voice with a smile in it --the same last September as it was in that high school office in the late 1960s or in that hot little office on the Hamburg Fair grounds--will stay with me always. Prayers and love to you.

Eric, I was very saddened to learn of the news about your mother, who capably was a fill-in mother to us all at our "other home." My heart-felt sympathies are with you and your family. I saw the photos of her at this summer's reunion only a few weeks ago, and was thrilled to see her there with everyone. (If Gloria Maddocks was there, it had to be school--what a comfort to see her there!) She presided over that office and made it run smoothly--and I know, because I was in her regal presence every day for at least four out of the six years I spent in that building. (She was so efficient, I'll bet she even had my very own pad of pink tardy slips all written out with my name on it, just waiting for her to rip off and hand to me every morning.) Her calm presence greeted me daily which, along with the low timbre of her beautiful voice, would send me off to my first class. Both expression and tone hit that perfect notch--neither admonishing nor judging--and I knew that if I could screw up the courage to enter that office where she reigned, I could make it through whatever the school day had to offer up. What placed her head and shoulders above the rest, aside from her exquisitely tall and elegant form, of course, was that she was just so classy. She personified beauty, from the way she held herself so gracefully, with such a fluid poise--despite the hustle and bustle of that office. She was all about style, from the fashionable way she dressed (and oh, could she dress!), to the way she spoke, the way she'd look at you with those lips pursed ever so slightly--she had it all. I adored her. I've expressed my regrets at these online remembrance pages with greater frequency as the passing of each administrator and teacher has gained momentum over the years. Yet, regardless of the merits of each, it is noteworthy that none has garnered such an overflow of sentiments as seen here in page after page of warm, glowing memories. (And that's just here, with only a fraction of her "kids" entering this site.) The consummate professional, still she was able to give everyone a familiar warmth that provided comfort and direction. We all respected her because she respected us, no matter how foolish we might feel (or actually be). We were incredibly fortunate to have had her at all, nevermind for as long as we did. Little comfort exists at such a time as this, so we seek out what bits we can. Mine is to imagine that she's gone to the office, and is getting us straightened out of the latest loopy mess we've managed to get ourselves into. If anyone can make order out of chaos, it's Gloria Maddocks. So I will take comfort in keeping that vision of her. But for the moment, I just feel a bit more alone in a world without her physical presence in it.
February 15, 2011
I will forever be thankful for the influence Mrs. Maddocks had on my life at LOLHS. A woman of great enthusiasm, she always stood tall with the student body. A great woman, with the ability to speak volumes without raising her voice and provide undying support for all student endeavors. I will always remember her presence at all the soccer and baseball games. The naming of the baseball field in her honor is just a small reminder of how much she meant to all she touched. Like any foundation, she was a rock for anyone to lean on. She will be missed.

Such sad news. Mrs Maddocks was one of those people who touched your life, when you weren't paying attention. So it was only appropriate that she be sent to guide and touch the lives of so many teenagers in Lyme Old Lyme. While I mourn her loss, and send my thoughts and prayers to her family, I am overjoyed with having been fortunate to know Mrs. Maddocks. Mrs. Maddocks was the glue that held it all together. Without her, our years in LOLHS would have been filled with far less support, less understanding and less humor. There are few people in this world who give 100% of themselves to be there for others, Mrs. Maddocks was one of those people. Gloria Maddocks Memorial
It is with a sad heart that I write these words
For the “Queen” of the Old Lyme High School herds
Such a bright spot in the office of the school
It was her domain, in there she did rule
How many hours did I spend in her presence?
Her energy was loving, an honorable essence
She ran that office with love and grace
She now takes up residence in a very special place
I spent time with her when I had no where to go
Sometimes she would comfort me when I was feeling low
Then she would send me to the post office down the street
I felt very honored, what a special treat
On her beautiful face was always a smile
She will be remembered for a very long while
She was always so kind to me and to others
For many of us there, she was like another mother
The places she touched in so many hearts
Will forever remind us we are never apart
Just beyond the veil of time and space
Will be a glowing ember, a sweet loving face
If you were blessed to know such a gentle spirit
Listen real close, can you not hear it?
She is only a mere thought away
Think of her now, think of her today
So to the “Queen” of our teenage years
I say “see you later” through my tears
You will be missed in this time and space
As you take your seat in the Heavenly Place
