Gloria Pall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2012.
The Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gloria Pall, the sultry hostess of a 1950s Los Angeles TV show that was canceled because it was deemed too hot for television, has died. Her son Jefferson Kane tells the Los Angeles Times that Pall died Dec. 30 of heart failure at a Burbank hospital. She was 85. Pall was cast by KABC-TV in 1954 to introduce each week's romantic movie. Appearing as "Voluptua," the statuesque Pall greeted viewers with a breathy coo and made sexy poses and flirtatious remarks. The station canceled the show after seven weeks amid pressure from religious and parent groups, and lackluster commercial sponsorship. The protests attracted national media attention. Pall, who later became a real estate agent, said her character was simply being suggestive.

I met Ms. Pall only one time, at a 2002 UCLA screening of the restored print of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. I'd been alerted to her coming, and I approached and welcomed her when she entered the lobby. She was genuinely surprised, "How did you know it was me?" But there was no mistaking the aura of classic Hollywood glamour she still embodied. She was very sweet, and we chatted for a bit, then exchanged gifts: I gave her a copy of my book about HUNTER, and she handed me a still of herself with director Charles Laughton on the set. I wish I'd had that wonderful snapshot when I was putting together illustrations for the book, ("Heaven and Hell to Play With: The Filming of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER"). But I was pleased that in the book I'd been able to give her the official credit for her role as the burlesque dancer who captures the full, malevolent attention of Robert Mitchum's murderous "Preacher" character, a part for which she had been unbilled in the film itself. I'll always kick myself for never following through on her kind invitation to sit down some time and discuss her experiences on HUNTER, but I still treasure the memory of our sole brief encounter. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of this singular lady.
