Gordon Finn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2025.
Gordon Stephen Finn passed away peacefully on the morning of January 14, 2025, in Walnut Creek, California, with his son by his side. He was 86 years old.

Born on October 13, 1938, in Oakland, California, Gordon spent his entire life in the state he loved. He was raised in El Cerrito with his parents, Dwight and Dorothy, and siblings, Shari, Al, and Marilyn. A standout student and athlete at El Cerrito High School, he excelled in football and track, earning all-county honors as a quarterback. He continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he played football and earned a degree in education while dedicating his time as a proud dad of his children.

Gordon dedicated 45 years to teaching biology, anatomy and physiology in the Acalanes Union High School District. Beginning at Del Valle High School in Walnut Creek and later at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, he not only educated but also inspired generations of students. Alongside his long teaching career, he was a passionate football and track coach. His most notable coaching achievement came in 1980 when he led Acalanes High School to its first-ever football championship and a berth in the North Coast Section playoffs. He later coached running backs and receivers at Saint Mary's College in Moraga for five seasons, including a perfect 10-0 season. Even in retirement, he continued coaching into his 70s, sharing one special season with his son Mike and grandson Lucas as a three-generation coaching staff that secured another league championship.

After retiring in 2007, while continuing his passion as a football coach, Gordon embraced life on the road with his beloved truck and trailer, traveling extensively with his wife, Meredith. Among their favorite adventures were a cruise to Alaska including a helicopter trip the glaciers and a ambitious road trip through Canada and camping at their favorite place, Graeagle. At home in Lafayette, he found joy hosting many gatherings and pool parties, barbecuing, taking morning walks and afternoon drives, playing the saxophone, and spending time with his wife, his family and his cherished dogs.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Meredith Finn; first wife, Judith Finn, children Mike Finn and Lori Johnston; daughter-in-law Emily Finn; sister Marilyn Meinzer; stepdaughters Pam Davis, Chrissy Wilberg, and Erin Mass; four grandchildren Andrew, Emma, Alexander, and Lucas; six great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Per Gordon's wishes, his memorial service will be private. In honor of his legacy as a teacher, coach, and mentor, those who wish to pay their respects may visit his Legacy account. Donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.com.

Writing my condolences to the family. We never met Gordon, but we did just find Scully and are blessed to have him in our life. He is safe, loved and wanted to make sure you all knew that

I learned a lot from Gordy Finn. First in football and again in biology. He was a great example, never raising his voice and always finding that teachable moment.
