Gordon Groff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2020.
Gordon Robert Groff, 63, died in Durham, N.C. on April 1, 2020. He was born in Detroit Mich. on July 13, 1956 to Hollen and Shirley Groff. He graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1974, received a B.S. in Education from SUNY – Oswego in 1978, and started his teaching career at the Catholic Diocese of Albany. In 1993 he moved to Florida where he taught 5th grade at Coconut Creek Elementary School until his passing.

An amazing teacher who worked with students with special needs, Gordon reached students other teachers could not. His students loved him for his sense of humor, caring spirit, and his ability to inspire them to be better. He loved to travel, spend time with family and friends, play fantasy football, and work with his students and fellow teachers at Coconut Creek Elementary.

Gordon is survived by his mother and father, Hollen Edward and Shirley Groff; his older brother's family, Hollen Mark, Roseanne, and Hollen Matthew Groff; his younger sister's family, Karen and Mike McClain, and Brea & Chris Griffith; and his youngest sister's family, Diane Groff and LeAnn Hinson. Due to current restrictions, a celebration of life service is delayed.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, he asked that donations be directed to 3 organizations: The Catholic Charities of Albany. Gordon started his teaching career in the catholic school system in Albany, at ccrcda.org; Duke Cancer Institute where Gordon received a diagnosis and options for treatment and care at dukecancerinstitute.org/give; Coconut Creek Elementary School. Funds will be used to purchase a Buddy Bench and purchase books for students. Venmo Michele Rothacker any donation.

Joshua 1:9. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage, be not frightened, neither be dismayed, for the lord your God is with you wherever you go."

There is so much that can be said about this amazing teacher. I´m sad that I will never be able to go back and show him all I have accomplished. He has always been an Angel on my shoulder. Thank you for being an inspiration in my life. May you rest in peace while you rock the heavens.

Even after 8 years, the memories of being in Mr. Groff´s class still are as real as the day they were made. He was like a father to his students and cared for them deeply. He would always joke with you when you were down and give you a stern talking to when they were acting a fool. Mr. Groff shaped me into the man I am today. I miss him dearly. Rest easy Sir.

I was in Mr. Groffs 5th grade class in 2012 give or take a year. Honestly it´s one of the only elementary school class memories I have left- He introduced us to hatchet, I remember watching that movie in his class. He cared about all his students and I absolutely loved being in his class. I had just found out about his passing and wanted to pay my respects. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful teacher. I was truly blessed to have had him as my 5th grade teacher. Just like our 5th grade graduation "I spread my wings and I´ll learn how to fly, I´ll do what it takes till I touch the sky". If I knew that would´ve been the last time we spoke I would´ve hugged him a bit harder. Till we meet again -Madison A.

Since life has paused for the time being, I had time to reflect on childhood memories and friends. Gordie was a good friend to me in my early years and I was saddened to learn of his passing when I looked him up. Gordie was one of the nicest kids in our "MacRae family" and I still remember with fondness, putting on a neighborhood play in our garage with him. Even at that early age, Gordie's kindness and gentle demeanor shone through. It sounds like he had a wonderful career and his students were blessed to have had him as their teacher. My condolences to all of you at the loss of such a sweet soul.

My deepest sympathies to the Groff family for the loss of their son, brother, uncle and friend. He was a special man and a gentle soul.

I knew Gordon in High School and was able to hang out on Friday nights with him and group of friends during that time. We had fun, playing Yachtzee with my grandmother or raiding my parents fridge. There was a lot of laughter.

He will always have a special place in my heart and I will miss him.

Gordon was a family friend since 1994. He was respected and admired by all who had the pleasure of meeting him. His kindness and compassion will truly be missed. We lost our teacher, a fine educator, one who led by example, we lost our friend. Rest in peace, we will not forget you....

I met Gordon down in Florida and immediately saw so many special qualities that he possessed. He was a great guy and very down to earth and real. May He Rest in Peace. He is back home in Heaven with God.

Gordon was the type of guy you would be honored to have as a friend. It was always a treat to visit him in Florida or to host him during his Summer vacation travels. He always seemed to know exactly what was needed in tough times. One can only imagine what an excellent school teacher he was. He will be missed....
