Gordon O'NEILL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 19 to May 20, 2016.
O'NEILL, Gordon Vincent
Gordon O'NEILL, 80, often referred to as Mickey, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was born on June 20, 1935 in Long Island, NY to Michael Joseph & Elizabeth (Woreth) O'Neill. Gordon's life was full of love and adventure. He enlisted in the Navy in 1954 and toured proudly on the USS Boston CAG-1. He loved being a volunteer firefighter with the West Hempstead & West Babylon NYFD from 1958 to1978. His successful career with ExxonMobil moved him and his family numerous times from NY to Wyoming to Texas and California. He retired from ExxonMobil after 30 years settling in Austin in 1993. After retirement, he volunteered for 22 years with the Seton NW Auxiliary. Gordon was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He never met a stranger.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, brother Gerard O'Neill and sister, Joan Borowski. He is survived by his wife Winifred of 57 years, his sons, Gordon O'Neill Jr. of Austin and James O'Neill and wife Dolores of Woodland Hills, CA; his daughter, Melissa Barringer and husband Jim of Bastrop, TX; grandchildren, Blake Barringer, Jack Barringer of Bastrop and Kyle Reyes of Millbrae, CA as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11 am at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio TX. A Celebration of his wonderful Life will follow at the home of his daughter in Bastrop.

Gordon always had a good story and a smile for everyone. He was so loved at Seton NW and will be missed. I will miss his special friendship over the several years we volunteered together. Have a good trip to Heaven, Gordon. --doc

Gordon was a gentleman. He brought smiles and laughter to all the volunteers of Seton Northwest. He always had a twinkle in his eye and could tell so many wonderful stories. He loved his family and often spoke of his kids and grandchildren. He loved Winnie beyond measure. Heaven gained an angel to be sure.

There is so much that the Seton Northwest Volunteers and I will miss about Gordon! He loved to tease and joke, to sit in the Volunteer Services Office and visit, and to banter with other volunteers. But he also took his responsibilities as the chair of the golf cart service area seriously and was always available to come right over to the hospital if he received a call from a golf cart volunteer about a problem with the cart. He dealt directly with the golf cart dealer on all maintenance issues, taking his personal time to do so. And was he ever great at Bingo--always a winner! Our thoughts and prayers are with Winnie, who was also a Seton Northwest volunteer, as well as the rest of the O'Neill family. Gordon was a wonderful man.
