Gordon Painter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2023.
Father and beloved husband, Gordon Anderson Painter passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023. He was born in Stuarts Draft, Va., on November 8, 1947 to Homer Parker Painter and Annie Elizabeth Sprouse. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gail Farrar Painter; his two children, Elizabeth (38) and Brenton (32); his African Grey Parrot, Cassidy (28); and cat Puss Irving (15).

Gordon spent many years working jobs in sales, especially with local cable companies-he could sell just about anything to anyone. For a brief stint, he also drove 18-wheelers, resulting in his family singing many choruses of "Roll On" by Alabama.

Throughout the years, he was often seen working side-by-side with Gail as they ran a number of thriving local dog grooming businesses, including their last venture before they both fully retired, Vogue Pet in Fishersville.

He was a frequent face at the Sunday Waynesboro Flea Market, a former AKC member and local Sheltie breeder, and on occasion attended Wayne Hills Deaf Fellowship with his wife.

He was known best for his snarky sense of humor, his deep love and compassion for animals, for always watching re-runs of old TV shows, and for wearing the same style of shirt for years. He was an expert at identifying antiques-particularly glassware-at making a good pot of beans and amazing biscuits and gravy, and at handling hurricane Gail and all her wild ideas for nearly half a century.

A good man with old-school sensibilities who didn't tolerate nonsense, if he didn't like you, you knew. A lover of Westerns, dog shows, old guns, and a good biscuit. A wealth of random knowledge, as well as everyday know-how and common sense life facts. An honest, bright-eyed agitator and prankster. He will be deeply missed.

The family will host a graveside service at Augusta Memorial Cemetery in Fishersville on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 11 a.m., followed by a fellowship gathering at Wayne Hills Baptist Church on 877 Ladd Road in Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gordon's name to the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center, 1001 Mt. Torrey Rd. Lyndhurst, VA 22952.

I met Gordon many years ago thanks to the CB Radio. I talked to him all hours of the day and night. Gordon was one of a kind, that's for sure, and I mean that in the most respectful way. What I knew of him, by sitting with him at over a cup of coffee at Weasies or even the Waffle House in Staunton, Gordon was a true gentleman and all around good guy. This world was a better place with Gordon and I know he will be sadly missed. God bless the family and I will hold you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Gail, This news is so sad. It´s like the end of an era...Gordon was absolutely one of a kind. He taught me many lessons during our career in cable sales. He will be missed. Evelyn
