CAMBRIDGE - Grace Dougherty, of St. Petersburg, born April 7, 1919, a retired teacher, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 at Westminster Suncoast Health Center. She lived at Westminster Shores Retirement Community since 1998. Born in Cambridge, Md., daughter of the late Russell P and Leila B Smith, she attended high school in Cambridge and was a graduate of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). Wife of the late Rev. A. Edward Dougherty, a United Methodist Minister, she taught elementary school in Manchester, N.H., for 22 years. During that time she took graduate courses at the University of New Hampshire. The couple retired to Florida in 1983 residing in the Bahama Shores neighborhood and later at Westminster Shores. Her husband of 59 years died in 2001. Mrs. Dougherty is survived by three sons, Alexander E. Dougherty, III (Ann), Jeffrey M. Dougherty (Lynne), and Timothy R. Dougherty; two daughters, Anna Lee Shipman and Leila S. Lavigne (Gerald); eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; also surviving is a brother, Russell P. Smith of Cambridge, Md. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace, Bayly, and Edward; and a sister, Anna Rue. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013 at East New Market Cemetery with Rev. Sumner Jones officiating. The arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, MD.
