Grace Jean Pulak
It is with much sorrow, but with hearts at peace, that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Grace Jean Pulak, at the age of 84. She passed away at Royal University Hospital with her family by her side on January 1st, 2014. She was predeceased by her parents and loving husband Albert recently in 2012, brother-in-law Mike; sister- in-law Jeanine and brother-in-law Robert, but leaves behind her children and grandchildren to carry on her spirit, Sharyl (Perry, Natasha) Kurz, Don (Helen, William, Sarah, Andrew) Pulak, James (Sharon, Cloe, Talon) Pulak. She is survived by her sisters Wilma Hagel, Olga (Robin) Studer and brother Frank (special friend Janet) Tarhos and numerous nieces and nephews. She was both a very special woman and mother who had a heart of gold and a great free spirit who made so many friends easily and kept them forever in her heart. Grace came to Canada as a young girl on a minesweeper from Europe during the Second World War and grew up on her family farm near Leask, SK, but it was her incredible compassion and caring for others that led to her career as a nurse at Royal University Hospital where she worked for 29 years all while raising her family. She was part of the original staff when the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit first opened, where she referred to all the infants in her care as "her kids". Though she shed many tears at night after work, this was greatly outweighed by the joy she felt when parents would write or visit with their children to show just how they were growing up and flourishing in the world because of her care. In 1954, she met the love of her life, Albert, whom she married and cherished through their 57 years together. But it was only after they retired that Grace and Albert took to travelling, and loved every minute of their many trips and adventures. They finally settled on Hawaii as their favorite vacation destination, and returned many, many times. Grace was also a member of the Royal Purple for many years and made a great number of friends that she cherished to this day. The family wish to thank the Doctors on 6000 at RUH, and especially the nurses who continually showed Grace and her family so much caring, compassion and dignity in her last days. A service will be held to celebrate Mom's life at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 8th, 2014 at the chapel of Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
