Gregory Cassel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2008.
CASSEL, Gregory Barr Son of the late Joseph B. Cassel and Patricia Skinner, died of natural causes on December 9, 2008 at the age of 57. Greg was born December 31, 1950 in Lubbock, Texas. He graduated from Monterey High School, where he played football. He then spent two years majoring in business at Texas Tech before he enrolled in the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York. Greg was an admirable actor and a respectable screenplay writer for the better part of twenty years. He completed two feature film screenplays as well as wrote for several television shows. Though he never ceased writing, he later began to train horses and teach music as rewarding hobbies. Greg's passions were sports, writing, music and horses as well as cherishing his beloved children. He will be remembered as a charismatic and fun guy. His positive attitude left a deep impression on those who knew him. Greg is survived by three sons; Jack (Julie), Matt (Lauren) and Justin; a daughter, Amanda; and his granddaughter, Nellie. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the San Fernando Mission Rey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Strides Therapeutic Riding Center (http://stridestherapeutic.com/help.aspx) in memory of Gregory B. Cassel.

Greg was a close friend. I met him in 1966 or 67...don't remember. He was one of the funniest guys I've ever known. I am sorry for his family. He will be greatly missed.

Greg was an amazing man. I grew up playing North Valley baseball and Northridge Knights football with Matt, and Greg was always a positive influence to the entire team! He was a motivator and a coach.

Greg taught me how to ride a horse! It was WOW....a great horse. I'll never forget those moments of my childhood with the Cassel family at the Mayerling ranch.

It's been many years since I've spent time with the family, but Barbara, Amanda, Justin, Matt, and Jack are all amazing people as well.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cassel's, and all who have been affected by this unexpected and unfortunate event.

I met Greg when he volunteered with the Born to Act Players, a theater group of professional performers with and without disabilities. When he moved out of the area a few years ago, his visits were less frequent, but he always managed to come back as he could, and was welcomed with open arms. His last visit to class was in November, and he attended our joyous group luncheon thereafter. Little did we know those would be our last hugs. Greg was a special friend to all, respectful, kind, and thoughtful. We will miss our cowboy.

Greg made music so much fun for our Born To Act Players. His kindness and talent will live on with all of us and I'm sure my late husband David will be delighted to greet him. With a thankful heart for knowing him, Rachael Bergen

Greg was a great friend. He was kind and generous, played guitar and sang songs for The Born to Act players; Greg was also a talented actor, and did improv theater with the group. Everywhere he went he made friends. Greg spoke often of his love and pride in his children.

I have known Greg ever since we were playing football together at Evans Junior High in Lubbock, Texas. He was always very friendly and was agood friend to me. The last time I saw Greg was in New York City in 1975 he was an actor living at my brothers house for awhile and I was on my way back to England and decided to lay over in New york to see my brother Steve. My prayers go out to Greg's family and I want you to know Greg was a fine person. The world is a little sadder today.

I met Greg and Barb before they had any kids and Greg was an actor and Barb a decorator. They were the most beautiful couple, filled with a million dreams and living in a small house in Beverly Hills. That’s also where Greg started writing. We all had high hopes for the future. There was so much excitement when Barb found out she was pregnant with Jack. Greg was so happy and proud. After Jack was born and only about-2-years old Greg brought him by my Dad’s office to introduce them. Jack held out his hand and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Sir”. My Dad was astonished at the manners and poise of such a little boy. Each child brought joy to their house, which was now a ranch in The Valley. Barb started working in the entertainment industry as a Set Decorator and Greg still wrote and auditioned whenever he could. The divorce was inevitable and left everyone devastated. The one thing I always knew was the love and devotion Greg felt toward Barb, Jack, Matt, Justin and Amanda. We all went our separate ways and years passed without being in touch. The news of Greg’s death was truly heartbreaking but I’ll always remember him at his happiest surrounded by his family.
