Gregory Chalfant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2025.

Gregory Allen Chalfant, 68, of Fairfax Station, VA passed away on September 11, 2024 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Private family services will be held at a future date.

Greg was born in Great Falls, Montana on January 5, 1956, the only son of Harry W. Chalfant and Marcie J (Walton) Chalfant.

He graduated from CM Russell high school in Great Falls, and received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from the University of Montana in Missoula. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and completed his officer training in San Diego, CA and his Masters degree from the Naval War College in Monterey CA. After proudly serving as a naval officer achieving the rank of Lt. Commander, he retired in 1997. He continued to serve his country in the private sector as DOD and US Navy program manager & contractor with Science Applications International Corp. He retired in November of 2021 from SAIC after 25 years of service. During both his military and civilian careers, Greg's life centered on two passions; his children and his country. He supported several international programs through both the DOD, DTRA nuclear programs and the US Navy that afforded him extensive travel throughout both careers.

He had a passion for music, every genre, and the house was always filled with it. He played guitar, drums when he thought no one was watching, and set mood music for every holiday, occasion, or just dinner whether the house was full of people or just he and Jeanne.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Chalfant and an infant niece.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Jeanne, his son Geoffrey Chalfant of Norfolk, VA; his daughter Caitlyn Chalfant of Vienna, VA; his step children Jamie Scarbrough and her husband Jeff Danz of Sioux Falls, SD; Melissa Sundell-Hall and husband Joseph of Auburn ME and Jeffrey Sundell, NM, five grandchildren, IngryAnna Thurow, Hannah Scarbrough, Alice Scarbrough, Oliver Hall, and Simon Hall; his mother, Marcie Chalfant; his sister Cynthia York and her husband Tim of Marion, IL; many nieces and nephews and five brothers-in-law and their families.
