Gregory Dimit Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2025.
Gregory Scott Dimit (67) passed away on Saturday, April 19th, 2025, due to complications from cancer. He faced his illness with bravery and grace, affecting and blessing all those around him. When reflecting at the end on his incredibly rich and rewarding life, Greg reminisced about the wealth of amazing experiences he'd had, and the deep meaningful connections he'd made, both in his personal and professional worlds. He was filled with gratitude for his life and how he lived it.

Greg grew up in Glendale, CA. He was a gifted student who loved piano, saxophone, water polo and leading the pep band. He attended Cal State University, Northridge, for their jazz program. But, realizing that the recording industry was moving away from the U.S. and from live musicians, he soon switched to economics.

In 1980, just as he started working for the accounting firm Price Waterhouse, Greg met his future wife when she became the choir director at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Van Nuys, where he was the organist. Two years later, they married in that church.

Greg chose to work for PW because they had an overseas program. He was eventually posted to Windsor, England, for three years, affording great travel and cultural experiences. He then transferred to Boston, where he was hired by his favorite client, United Asset Management (UAM) and worked there for 10 years, moving into Mergers and Acquisitions.

Greg left UAM and took a "gap" year to play piano, cook, and travel extensively with Karen. After he worked freelance in Boston and New York for several years, Greg and Karen were seduced by the siren sound of cultural life in NYC, where they moved permanently in 2003. Greg rejoined his former UAM colleagues who had created a new investment banking firm, Colchester Partners, taking great satisfaction in the teamwork, the challenges and the clients.

Meanwhile, Greg kept up his piano by performing recitals with Karen, as she pursued a singing career. After she pivoted to artmaking, their musical focus expanded to the intimate improvisations of Argentine tango, in both Buenos Aires and the U.S., where, in addition to dancing, they helped support live performances and sponsored new music.

Generous, kind, caring, curious, supportive, smart, enchanted, fully engaged with life, Greg truly listened and made people feel heard. A real role-model, he was a stand-up man with strong moral fortitude and empathy.

A multitude of friends, family, co-workers and clients will miss Greg's influence on their lives, none more so than his incredibly lucky partner of 45 years, Karen Kettering Dimit. Besides his beloved Karen, he left behind his mother and father, Marilyn and Lester Dimit (his father passed away 8 days later); his sister, Dana Anderson; his brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Cathy Dimit; Karen's sister and brother-in-law, Joelle and Wayne Jakubowski; and so many of Karen's extended family, who all adopted Greg as their own.

A Celebration of Life for Greg will be held on Sunday, July 20th from 11am - 1:30pm (the more formal program starting at 12pm), at Culture Lab LIC, 5-25 46th Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101 (culturelablic.org) .

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of the charities Greg and Karen have supported for decades: The Community Music Center of Boston (https://cmcb.org) or Oxfam America (https://www.oxfamamerica.org)

Dear Karen,

This may not have been your favorite trip to Buenos Aires, but I will always remember Greg's grace despite getting sick. I wish I could attend the beautiful celebration you're planning on Sunday, but I'm afraid I cannot. I will hold you in the light. Abrazos fuertes, Dawn

Greg was a huge influence on our lives. He came to the closing dinner he threw even though it was obviously difficult for him for one of his last transaction. He was generous kind and wise. We miss him hugely. Brent Belzberg of TorQuest Partners

Every time I walk to my studio and pass by Karen's studio building, I still expect I might run into Greg on the sidewalk, always with a smile on his face and a friendly greeting. I know we all missed seeing him at this year's LIC Arts Open festival. I hope that he's somewhere practicing his tango... I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Karen and his entire family.
With love,
Zoë Morsette
