Gregory Malover Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2024.
Gregory James Malover, age 75, of Southfield, MI, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024. Born on March 9, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, to Henry and Justine Malover, Greg's life was filled with family, levity, and a profound sense of adventure.

Growing up in Lathrup Village, Greg graduated from Southfield High School in 1967 before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Oakland University in 1972. His natural curiosity about people and the world was reflected in his studies and beyond.

As a young man, Greg was drawn to the performing arts, a passion he pursued with enthusiasm. Whether taking the stage in Detroit's Vanguard Theater production of "Jack and the Beanstalk" or performing in "The Taming of the Shrew" at the Will-O-Way Theater, Greg had a gift for captivating an audience. His love of performing continued throughout his life, most notably as the lead singer of the rock band The Chairs, where Sunday jam sessions with his bandmates brought him endless joy.

Greg embodied the spirit of the Woodstock generation. He embraced the era's defining moments of peace, love, and music, even attending the historic Woodstock festival in 1969. These experiences helped shape Greg's open-hearted nature and his dedication to serving others.

His career took him from working with children facing mental illness to becoming a Probation Agent with the Michigan Department of Corrections. Greg found immense purpose in his work, building strong relationships with his colleagues, who often referred to him as a "legend" for his commitment, enthusiasm, and style. He retired in 2014 after 18 years of dedicated service.

A true adventurer at heart, Greg took time in the 1980s to explore the Southwest, riding his beloved Triumph motorcycle through the desert landscapes he adored. He had a deep appreciation for nature, often found kayaking or hiking around Michigan's beautiful lakes, always treasuring the small details, like collecting autumn leaves to keep at home as a reminder of the world's simple beauty.

Greg's vibrant personality and love of life made him a beloved "Favorite Uncle" to his fifteen nieces and nephews. His natural charisma, combined with his playful spirit, created memories that will be cherished forever by his family.

A passionate collector, Greg was famous for his carefully chosen holiday gifts-unique memorabilia that reflected his eclectic tastes and thoughtfulness. He had an incredible talent for making every occasion feel special.

Greg is survived by his sisters Sharon Scafuri of Franklin, MI, and Maryalice Gilbert (Steve) of Mooresville, NC; and his brothers Raymond Malover (Teresa) of Southfield, MI, Brian Malover (Denise) of Troy, MI, Lawrence Malover (Barbara) of Royal Oak, MI, and Kevin Malover of Chicago, IL. His spirit will continue to live on through them and all who knew him.

Greg's ashes will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 25800 W. 10 Mile Road, Southfield, MI, on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 10:00 AM. A memorial luncheon will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Greg's memory be made to the Karmanos Cancer Institute (karmanos.org).

I had the good fortune to grow up, with my brothers Brad and Mark Diekman, in Lathrup Village near the Malovers. Brad and I went with Greg to Woodstock, which was a wonderful and indelible experience! And though I long ago moved away from Michigan, I would return around Christmas, and would enjoy attending, with Brad -- drummer for Chairs -- Sunday night gatherings of the band. Greg's talent and enthusiasm for music were a joy to his bandmates and friends.

Chrysler District Probation office on Clinton St, Detroit is where I first met Greg. He was always the smiling colleague with good advice and words of wisdom. He was a treasure to work with as he always had your back! May his memory be a blessing!
