I know he's been gone for over 4 years and he was just my doctor but he was by far the most caring and compassionate one I have ever had. Such a great guy and trusted him every time I had a visit and made sure I was gonna be healthy again. Thank you.

Judy, my deepest sympathy to you & your family. I just recently learned of Dr. Matz's death. I have great memories of Dr. Matz sailing & in the OR. I worked with him in the outpt.OR where I was a nurse. I think I rekindled his love for sailing when I took lessens at George Wm. College in Williams Bay,WI. We went sailing there a few times. The next year Dr. Matz partnered on a wreck in Belmont Harbor. He took me on my 1st lake Michigan sail. Dr. Matz kept calling it The "Big M" experience. The 2 of us sailed in that night with only the jib. No gas, radio or lights. After that I always brought gas. I called that night "Scary M". A few years later he got the real sailboat at Montrose.

Dr. Matz loved his family so much. He delighted in telling me about each of the children & grandchildren. He loved you so much too. I believe he told me about a skiing trip you took before you were married. I don't think Greg went. That trip urged him to realize what a gem you are.

Dear Judy,

I just found out about Greg, and I am truly sorry to hear the news. I was honored to work with him at the University of Chicago. He was great mentor, a dedicated teacher, an astute administrator, a man of great faith, and a beloved friend and colleague. He was very supportive of the rotation at Michael Reese and of me in my role as chairman there. He will be missed by many. He will not be forgotten by those who knew him.

My best wishes and prayers go out for you and your family.

Judy, Diane and I are saddened to hear about Dr. Greg's passing. We have very fond memories of Greg from Mary Seat of Wisdom.

I got to know Greg at Loyola Medical School where I was the alumni director. He help me establish a strong medical alumni reunion program there. He always had a smile on his face and made me laugh. He would write down phone numbers on his arms when I would ask him to contact alumni when met him in the cafeteria between surgeries. He told me that he drove the worst car to work, so he would not have to worry about getting dinged in the parking lot. He was very dedicated to his profession, his patient, interns and medical students. He was a true friend.

I was so sorry to learn of Dr. Matz's passing. As a Standardized Patient in Loyola's Stritch School of Medicine I had the honor of working with Dr. Matz in one of the "Head to Toe" encounters with the students. He had a wonderful way of delving into not only the medical students, to see what they were really like, but to us "S.P.'s" as well. Finding out that I was from Chicago he had to know where I went to high school and what part of the city I came from. And he proudly talked about being a north sider and being Congressman Dan Rostenkowski's cousin, and living next door to him. So at that I said "so you lived on Evergeeen, just down the street from St. Stanislaus Kostka church, and had the tall barrier walls across the street to block you from the Kennedy Expressway." He just stared at me in shock and said that I was describing where he lived growing up, wanting to know how I could possibly know that. I really never saw his house, but I remembered that that's where Dan Rostenkowski lived. He was one of my favorite Doctors to work with as a S.P. and he will be greatly missed. My sincere sympathy to his family.

My deepest condolences to Judy and the Matz family. Dr. Matz was a dear friend and mentor. He was generous with his sound advice, never short of humor, and quick to express his amusement in the irony of a situation. A wonderful role model for all to follow, he was committed to lifelong achievement and serving humanity, always with a humble countenance.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Matz.

He was one of my original interviewers for medical school at Loyola. His guidance and kind consideration really made a difference in my life.

I wouldn't be where I am today had it not been for Dr. Matz.

I was so sorry to hear about Dr. Matz's death. He was a wonderful and caring gentleman. Sometimes he was inquisitive, and other times he was pensive. I first met him as a 3rd year medical student at Loyola, and I had the pleasure of being one of his residents. He showed interest and compassion to everyone around him. He would even take interest in the medical students that rotated through ENT even though he was chairman of the the department. If they were from Chicago, he would always ask "Where did you go to high school?" He was really good at managing the different personalities and issues in the department. I will be forever grateful to him for allowing me to do what I do today.

Judy, God bless your family and you. I am sorry for your loss. He will truly be missed.

Sincerest condolences to Judy and the entire Matz Family. Dr. Matz was instrumental in building a wonderful ENT department. I was privileged to be part of that early in my career. He always saw the best in others and looked for common ground. In the service of the "greater good," he seemed devoid of personal ambition, preferring to help others succeed. He was a kind and good-natured man with genuine generosity of spirit. Well done, Dr. Matz!

My thoughts and prayers to all the family and friends of Greg: there are many. Being a graduate of the sister high school of his: Gordon Tech/ Weber he began our relationship with some friendly critique even though I was interviewing for residency. He then remembered this through my entire career, but served as a great mentor, friend, and sponsor during my career for which I am forever grateful. Greg was a great role model and will be missed by all he touched.

Dear Judy, and the Matz Family and the Loyola family. Kind, funny, stalwart, caring and unflappable, are all words that come to mind when there are no other words to say.... He was a great leader for our LUMC Otolaryngology dept. He was instrumental in my development as an ENT doc. God's peace be with you all.

Greg was a mentor and friend. His gentle nature and gracious spirit inspired residents and colleagues alike to always put the patients interest above all else. Greg and I shared a passion for baseball trivia and as the internet became the prime mode of communication, I would get my weekly question and challenge(s) to my answer(s). He will be sadly missed and his memory will always be a blessing to those who were his friends.

I am so sorry for the loss of Dr. Matz. I was his nurse for Head and Neck Cancer many years go. I learned so much from him regarding management of patients but much more about the compassion for a fragile patient population. I still remember my first house call, he told me "there will be a picture of Pres. Kennedy and a picture of the Pope in most homes." Our first case was a frail man in a hospital bed in his living room with his hand thru the rail petting his cat while his equally frail wife was suctioning him. Dr. Matz said to me "I know you would feel more comfortable for them to be in the hospital but this is where they want to be and we will make it work." He was right. His care, compassion and sense of humor were unparalleled. He would sit close to the patient, look them in the eyes and often ask questions that caught them off guard, "where were you raised, you look like you might have played football, etc." Questions for which he had a legitimate interest and they made the patient feel at ease and the encounter unhurried and calm. He was a giant in many ways. Prayers to the family for the peace that passes all understanding in our earthly minds.
